In the suburbs of my home state, $550 a month could get you a one bed room apartment on the edge of a middle class neighborhood with low violent crime. About 1k a month can get you a multistory 2 bedroom townhouse. Of course, I’m only counting the rent and not other bills.

It’s only the upper middle class/wealthy neighborhoods that will run you 2k+ a month for an apartment. In the city, it’s obviously a lot more expensive but still not as expensive as say New York.

Suburban Newark area a 2 BR apt in a decent spot is going to run you about 1500-1700 a month. 1100-1300 if you don't mind being in the hood.
