Imagine having all the music at your fingertips and still complaining about a genre you don’t have to listen to

I'm a 90s hip-hop fan, yet I'm 25. Some trap rappers are cool, but most are too repetitive and forgettable within 3-5 years. Most rappers I listen to from today are Kendrick, Tyler, Earl, JoeyBad, J. Cole, and Vince Staples because they actually choose to have a different style than most rappers out. You cant just say "oh well, just listen to other music " . OP did NOT say Trap is bad, he's saying Trap shouldn't be the most exclusive type of music hip-hop has to offer. You think Boom-Bap was the only sub-genre? What about G-Funk, Jazz Rap, Chopped and screwed, alternative rap, etc? Hip-hop is an umbrella with tons of subgenres to offer, but its Trap music that gets most of the attention. I dont think OP is saying Trap is bad, bu it's been in the mainstream for over a decade. When are people gonna give it a rest and look for a different sound?

no i get it but you are trying to cherry pic which hip hop act was suppressed to make an excuse for why PE never topped the chart. if hip hop was suppressed than the groups who were already doing better than PE would have done even better as well, and not all of them were pure pop rap but most were. thats why PE never topped the chart even after it opened up.

as long as you recognize that "there are exceptions", which is pretty much my point. those exceptions were more popular because of the content. conscious based music was never as popular as other subgenres old heads would have you believe when they rant about these days

The rappers who topped the charts, Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and Beasties were the definition of pop rap.

They're the ONLY ones who had no.1 albums before 1991. That's it.

Even Run-DMC, who were universally loved and accepted never had a no. 1 album.

You just are either too young or were too out of it to know what the fukk you're talking about.

P.E. in their prime was the biggest thing culturally going on in Hip-Hop.

Billboard charts was not equipped to reflect that.

They were having Spike Lee direct their videos and "Fight The Power" was the soundtrack to one of the most successful movies on the time. Oscar nominated and shyt.

People were looking to Chuck D. to be the new Malcolm X (which he smartly NEVER wanted anything to do with).

They were opening for U2(who was the biggest band in the world, period) on their tours and shyt.

Nobody else in Hip-Hop was as critically acclaimed and popular like PE was in the late '80s/early '90s.

They were the first rap group to win the Village Voice Album of the Year.
