You're not as likely to have it in the city.

I work with a breh from Texarkana that's country as shyt. I'm from the country originally and every now and again someone will ask where I'm from.

As for these "Atlanta natives"... ask em what high school they went to :comeon: Pretty sure you're talking about a bunch of transplants

Atlanta may be transient, but the people I'm referring to grew up in the ATL area and moved to New York in recent years. Not a huge sample size of people, though.

The city they don't have that twang in their speech. They speak regularly, I grew up with some, well went their school for awhile. Outside the city though their more country than Randy Quad.

I always wondered which accent is fading out faster....The “Southern” accent or the “Northern” accent? Maybe the Southern accent since the General American (ppl who talk “regular” or sound like news anchors and Fox Sports announcers) accent is, by default, a Northern accent technically.

Depends where you're from.

I worked at a hotel in college. People would call from NYC, NJ etc., and they thought I sounded extra country (from Dallas). It was like they couldn't even hear how strong their own accent was.

I still got mine. It gets heavy when I’m drinking, though.

Mine got thicker once I moved to Mississippi, and then came here to ATL.

I notice that white people under 30 or so seem to not have Southern accents anymore throughout the urban/Suburban South. I meet people from all over the Southern US and I rarely hear discernible Southern accents from white people.
While black people may be keeping it alive more than white people, I do think it is slowly declining among black people too. I've met Atlanta natives and people from elsewhere in the South with surprisingly neutral accents.
I think the media (TV, internet, music) have watered down regional accents in the US, and it's particularly noticible among the younger generation.
I noticed that with my lil cousins. They speak proper English which is good but I just noticed they don't sound like older people in the family. I was wondering where they got it from bc we're from New Orleans and we have a strong accent. Both their parents have strong accents and aunts uncles and grand parents.

Tf?? I work with people from all day vet and when they from the south it’s obvious before I even have to check their ID. It’s funny cause I just confirm it and ask them about where they from. I often say that I’ve been called country cause of how I talk even though I’m from Chicago. But no breh, the southern accent ain’t goin nowhere.

ever.
