Here's a depressing thought. We have spent ~$8T on the military since 9/11 and don't have anything to show for it. Current estimate to bring our infrastructure up to speed: $3T. What do you guys think would have been the better way to spend the money?

I am 110% behind the public works/infrastructure spending. We need it in many different ways no homo.

We have a 4.9% unemployment rate. What we need are higher wages and an increase in the minimum wage would go a long way in doing that.

1. Halt the flood of illegal immigration...this will open some of the few low skill jobs we have left...also tax the ones appropriately that for whatever reason we refuse to deport and send back

2. Make sure that corporation's are taxed appropriately and remove the loopholes
3. reduce military spending and do a hard audit on what we are spending on in areas like education
4. My fathers jobs are never coming back...but you can start new factories for new technologies like Solar panels and any new tech that can better society
5. GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS...you cant do any of the first 4 points without removing the incentive for politicians to follow the lobbyists that will fund them over the people
6. raise the floor of the minimum wage to at least 10.00 an hour

None of this will bring back what we want but will at least make it so the country can recover somewhat from the state its in

Unemployment rate doesn't mean shyt

If it did it would move in the opposite direction of labor participation rate. Boomers are not retiring that fast. What is really happening is a lot of unemployed people are just going on disability, which after a while removes them from people counted as employed or unemployed.

Illegal immigrants aren't flooding anymore, all 30 million of them are here. If you want to boost minimum wage, have to send them packing so that actual American citizens can get their jobs :yeshrug:

We are already seeing wage gains thanks to low "unemployment".... imagine how much stronger wages would be with 10-30 million less people who generally do jobs at the lower end of the payscale :jbhmm:

You have a generation that simply won't be making the type of money their parents made, making 80K without a college degree isn't happening again:yeshrug:
The social stigma of making alot less than that has to change, and that starts with the cost of living decreasing. But aside from that a lot of disgruntled white people are just pissed because they can no longer moral grandstand and overstate how grit and grind helped them make it to where they are.

Smart of Trump to focus on trying to bring back jobs, but it's not going to happen. No president will think this far out, nor will our Congress, but they should really be thinking of what to do with people when robots take over most jobs in 20 to 30 years.

Jerry Brown is a jackass, but he was on the right path when he said, "Jobs for every American is doomed to failure because of modern automation and production. We ought to recognize it and create an income-maintenance system so every single American has the dignity and the wherewithal for shelter, basic food, and medical care. I'm talking about welfare for all. Without it, you're going to have warfare for all."

Elon Musk said something about this recently as well.

No Republican could consider Brown's statement with a straight face right now, but it's a very real problem that will need addressed and I'm not sure what the options are.

One way or the other, basic income is going to be a reality if capitalism is going to survive.

Did you get hacked?

Trump hasn't focused on anything though. His "jobs" plan is just a call and respond chant at his rallies. He can't even read let alone develop a plan to revive America's employment. I think a lot of the worries about automation are overblown. There's still a lot of work that needs to be done by people. Problem is the govt has not done a good job at reallocating labor and facilitating the retraining of people.
