Asking you to do that mid-call is unprofessional on his part. Has to do that at the beginning of the call or just take the clue that something isnt right. Especially if you are attentive and giving good input. I will say though, if its a standard that you turn your camera on and yours was off, you may be better stating a reason at the beginning of the call to nix any awkward moments. Or you might want to upload a professional head shot of you to use as an AV for your zoom/skype/teams just in case this happens again.

If you're talking/contributing to the discussion....that's all that matters. Managers and higher level execs can be on camera but rank & file employees don't need to be. There's no real reason for it except for folks wanting to be nosy.

I think if it involves clients it would be good to have the camera on.

Cosign, i keep a hat and a pair of glasses on deck just in case i get emergency "web cam" meetings. I don't work with clients so this ain't often, most of my coworkers will join and they also look like trash so we all being ugly together.
I do think that their needs to be some sort of etiquette to video conference tho. If its not in the meeting maker, then it ain't right to pop that shyt up on people. OP, you was in the right for that, only assuming you let them down easily.

All I can add is that work gave me two monitors and one of them has a the camera. That bytch been in the box for the last year. No one needs to see me eating avacodo and cheese and my desk.
