My automatic reaction was that’s dumb but music is for having a good time, dancing and feeling good. So both extremes, overly violent & overly preachy aren’t technically good. But lyrics have always mattered.

Songs like this are needed now. Upbeat, vibrant

Historically Music amongst Black Folks has NEVER ONLY BEEN "ENTERTAINMENT"!

A piece of the "Soul" of our people and in our music is removed, when "Entertainment" is the only focus, SMH!
Our ancestors putting entire encoded escape routes in the spirituals that they sang was just entertainment, Bro!
Stop trying to vibrate higher & just party, ol' smarty arty ninja!

I always felt like the push for "lyrical rap" was a way for outside groups to get in the game and be taken seriously because then it just comes down to the pen/bars, whether you write it or not. Whereas "vibe rap" can't be replicated as easily by outside groups and there's less room for people outside of the culture to come in.
Bro I got news for ya: a large percentage of these trap/ drill beats that's being vibed to are being made by non-black 14 year olds from Idaho and Montana.

Case in point, here's a white girl that makes drill beats:

Modern day "vibe" rap can be VERY easily replicated.

That's wild, any songs with her on it rapping? Cac's and asians were making beats too when sampling was a thing so that's not unusual. Who is the face of the culture though at the end of the day?

I think it's impossible to be this one dimensional when it comes to music. People just yap about this generation vs that generation or vibe because they can't describe what they feel when they listen to music they like. I struggle with that shyt too unless it's directly about a subject matter but I won't admit that.

I kinda have htis sentiment, but not to this extreme. It takes me too long to process words when i'm listening to music, plus I don't relate to 90% of it. But there are times where the lyrics are just stupid and it takes me out of the mood. But music in general for me is just about a good vibe. Metal, Rap, R&B, House, Its usually background music to me doing something, so I'd definitely say I underappreciate lyricism. Sound is more important for me

It’s because lyrical rappers can’t compete on actual commercial viability. They themselves admit this constantly. What popular artists do is NOT easy. The purists can’t catch a hit to save themselves. Literally. SAVE THEMSELVES.

Again, I think this was the most important thing D Dot said on a rap platform lately. The Bad Boy guys consciously tried to avoid shyt that people couldn’t consume because doing that spiritual-miracle stuff was too easy.

Unfortunately, it's us. Letting white folks turn us into the face of mindlessness and criminality is the reason this mayo monkey felt comfortable saying this BS with his whole chest --->

As if the mindless criminality genre just started and hasn’t existed since the 90’s. I’d say it’s been lessened over time compared to the mid 90s. The great escape just came out last year.
