The amount of coppin pleas I see in this thread, straight up lies 
I have never seen anyone look down on smart kids in the black schools I went to.

it’s a bullshyt lie lames, nerds and geeks use to excuse the fact they were socially insufferable to be around so kids naturally gravitate towards picking on.

Ditto. It was "cool" to be smart. We side-eyed people who wasn't trying to get good grades.

I mean, we didn’t really call nikkas “bullies” either. It was more like “this nikka keeps trying/testing me” or nikkas would try to roast you and you either roasted back or faded.
I was always down to fade. And then I started boxing at the neighborhood gym and my whole status changed because I was decent at that as well
So I would just be like “aight, I’ll see you outside of class” because I knew they was just cappin for hoes and for their friends in the safety of class. That shyt was real at least for me. Checked a few dudes out there, had a few fights, got jumped, etc.
But nobody fukked with you for being smart it was more if they thought you were soft. Plenty nikkas thought it was sweet against quiet dudes and got fukked up too

Some of this depends on what type of school you went to.
You got some schools where the valedictorian is on the football team and maybe takes a few honor classes here or there.
You got other schools where you can't even sniff the top 15-20 in the class unless you're taking IB courses multiple summers. Kids getting notes from doctors that they can't take PE so they can replace that with AP European History. Kids taking 5-6 AP classes their sophomore, junior, and senior year. Schools with multiple kids getting 1400+ on the SAT and sending 10-15 kids to Ivies. It's damn near impossible to compete on that level, and still be considered "cool" by your classmates.
I'm not saying every kid in that grouping is a socially inept "lame", but since the bulk are, the small amount of ones that weren't lame are gonna catch some heat by being in the same classes as the "lames". Maybe not hardcore, but they'll get joked on.

Problem solved (I taught my niece how to box. Basic shyt, had her on the bags and everything. Reflex bag, heavy bag, Mitts... whiteboy tried her at school and she left him leaking. She got suspended but problem solved. 3 years later and now she’s prom queen, dance queen, etc.)
It was definitely a thing, but today being nerdy and different is embraced...
I mean where do guys think all of the anti-bullying shyt came from? Gay guys prenteded that they were straight, lames pretended that they were cool, nerds dumbed themselves down, poor people pretended that they weren't broke as a joke...
A lot of people weren't allowed to live their best lives due to social conformity.
