Decent album just doesn’t have the replay value of GKMC or S80.

Much better than Damn though.

Everything on that album was remarkable except the rapping. Blacker the berry had some dope rapping, but that’s it. DAMN is way better lyrically, even tho he rambles on that album too.

That's my problem with this album and Kendrick himself ever since. The entire rollout was centered around Interscope Kendrick claiming the title of Best Rapper Alive and the overdone hype about the Control verse, only for him to just skate by on 80% of the records. He was less important to that album that Black Thought is to The Roots, while spitting at like 1/10th the level. It's excellent music, an amazing body of work, but possibly one of the most disappointing lyrical performances from a potential GOAT in his prime ever.

TPAB gets hated for these reasons;
1) If you're under 30, you fukk with Drake/Future/Lils/Babys/Boogies and Kendrick is the antithesis of that materialistic yodeling. Production was too organic.

2) If you're over 30, the album is too "safe" because he's not not channeling '91 Cube and Chuck D and spending 50 minutes telling you white people are devil crackers and we need to get machine guns and take the nation.

Where on that album does Kendrick sound like the best RAPPER alive to you? Where does he even sound like he's trying to claim that title?
You called it a "lyrical disappointment" and "skating"

If he was '99 Canibus y'all would say he's doing too much. How is any of this "skating" on the album when 85% of nikkas calling themselves rappers right now don't even rap?

Do you have an example of him or anybody current living up to that title?

We're not talking about 85% of the game right now, we're talking about the top 5% all time, which is where he's supposed to be. There have been 3 rappers in modern history to specifically claim "Best Rapper Alive":

Jay did it on The Black Album

And Wayne did it on Carter II

the entire rollout of TPAB was centered around Kendrick taking THAT title. Combined with the Control verse/hype, Kendrick was supposed to prove he was bar for bar the best out. He was supposed to be hungry for that spot like they were. It was supposed to be a whole album of Look Out For Detox/Rigomortus/Cartoon and Cereal-level spazzin out on the mic. Instead he dropped an amazing album that he as an MC was pretty much the worst part of and the people accepted it as "proof" of him being the best RAPPER in the game when he didn't and really made no effort to prove that. The music didn't match the rollout and the hype at all, even in its greatness. I don't blame him for that, I blame the Aftermath/Interscope Machine and nikkas for buying into it. :yeshrug:
