As someone that works in retail, I highly doubt a store is going to let you return jeans from 3 years ago.
UNLESS you bought 5 BASIC pairs that are still in stores. (In which case you returned without a receipt--hence the store credit)

AND when I say 'basic' I mean these.

These are 'Ricky' cut in Lonestar wash. (Lonestar is available on the TR website. It's an old wash. I personally have a few pairs in this wash)

Depending on the retailer, the length of time you can return an item varies...but if he returned it at Macy's/Bloomingdales there is no limit to how old something has to be to return it. More than likely he'd get store credit if it had been over 180 days from when he purchased it and he only had the tags of the clothes & no receipt

However, I'm sure you know, as a manager in retail, that after a certain time price go down.
If Vado bought a pair of, let's say, "Joey Super Ts in Destroyed Cowboy" for $319 in 2011, they would not still be sold/available in stores in 2014.
If by chance he still had them, brand new with the tags, they probably would scan as 'item not found' or something of the sort in the system. In the even they did ring up, they wouldn't still be $319.
He returned 5 pairs and got back $710, which averages out to $142 a pair (we don't know which ones he got, so the pairs could have been more or less). The more basic pairs, from what I recall were about $179-198. However, 3 years after the fact they would not still be that same price. I'd even say they'd be less than $100.
(When I worked at true religion, I was about to get a few pairs for $20-granted that was with my employee discount, but the price was lowered from whatever they retailed, down to $50.)
The store that I work at now... If someone tried to return something. They got 3 years ago, they would most likely get a store credit for $10.

Anyways, my point is, while it's possible he was able to return 5 pairs of True Religions from 2011 for $710, I highly doubt it.

Yes merchandise does go to penny or Marked out of stock status after a certain period of time which would result in said merchandise being returned lower than what he bought it for. That would apply if he had no proof of purchase. However, If he did have valid proof of purchase he'd get back exactly what he paid, regardless of what style the clothes were.

I'm speaking from a Macys/Bloomingdales perspective tho, but I think that applies since both retailers carry True Religion and what he described in the OP sounds like what would happen in a scenario where someone brings back clothes that are older than 180 days
