I was at a hostel (which is not our.hostel, it's still a hotel if not a motel really) and I was paying as low as 35 cedis a night, from 50 a night because I was there for so long, especially during the lockdown which students weren't allowed to return. That's $8.64 to $6.05 a night. Bathroom and toilet Included. You think I'm being redundant but what you need to understand is that—or what I should say what you already know—not every lodging has its own toilet and bath. sometimes you will find what do you call a chamber and Hall which only includes the room but a public toilet and shower.
That was lodging but food. Same price for a decent restaurant but I use the word decent loosely. Local food could be $5.18 or 30 cedis max. What people need to understand especially these failed mind readers on this forum is that fast food and food in general here in Ghana is different from the United States. Customer service is a privilege not a right. Fresh food is a privilege not a right. Order within is an establishment is a privilege not a right. I've gotten food poisoning in number of timeshare while in Ghana. I'm talking about having the runs and hurling. There's no such thing as asking somebody at a restaurant for a certain cut of meat. You accept what is given to you. That means you may ask for beef in addition to your fufuand instead of getting pure meat you might get a piece of bone with collagen skin fat and a small amount of meat and that's just the way it is. Chicken is chicken it is not separated between dark meat and white meat. You will have to be stoic and fight to keep your position in line because anyone will skip you without a thought. Ghana is the place where the waiters and waitresses will use colonial names in this case English names but barely understand your American English and then have the gall to look in your eyes and tell you that you need to speak English. If yes is also a place where false advertisement is the norm. You will see banners have pictures of foods that not only they do not serve but they won't tell you that either. You see a picture of a burger? That's just clipart the pub in never serve the burger as long as the restaurant was open. You will see pieces of food that was cooked in the morning still there any afternoon and when you ask for new food to be cooked they'll look at you like you are the problem. Again as I have said before if you're going to take your colonial Masters name and language a language in which spell check is not used so you will see misspelt words on banners many many many times, then the least you could do is to take his business model and acumen but that is not the case at all in Ghana. A lot of businesses don't have phone numbers and even when they pick up the phone really they will introduce themselves in the name of the business so it begs the question is their business and personal number one in the same? For those who eat salads there is no such thing as salad dressing just Mayo and ketchup. Fast food here is ramen noodles and eggs that's been barely scrambled and cooked to high heaven. Don't come to Ghana looking for egg recipes from the United States. Eggs are only cooked one way here in Ghana. It's almost as if it's not about enjoying the food but just sustaining yourself. And then you're fine the same day in Accra just at higher prices.
