I know its hindsight, but the best course of action is to major in something practical (like a stem for instance) and also major in a liberal art like philosophy.

In this way, she could become an integral part of the upcoming STEAM movement.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics.

Sucks so many kids come out of school, and are so misguided with so much student loan debt. This "You can be whatever you wanna be" culture needs to stop

I blame the media and guidance counselors. Don't prepare them for the world at all

Feel sorry for any high school senior in this era :mjcry:

Philosophy degree from the right school and she would be doing any job she wanted (most likely consulting or high finance)

Figure out what you want to be in life, then work backwards from there. It's not so hard. Getting into a major and not knowing what you want to do is like going on a road trip and not knowing the destination.

Philosophy grads get great careers if they put the effort in

Loads of lawyers, bankers, consultants, businessmen have philosophy degrees

She needs to leverage her "transferable skills" such as logic, reasoning, argumentation into an actual career :yeshrug:

Hell, any degree is good if you know how to market your transferable skills and personality

Everywhere...You never there.
How you go to school for philosophy but can’t use your brain

:wow:

I’m not gonna shyt on OP like that but I will say mastering theory and mastering practical application of that theory are two different animals .

I will also say , outside of the Ivies and little Ivies and top tier tech schools, earning a Bachelors — by and large depending on major — is less about demonstrating advanced critical thinking and more about demonstrating discipline and commitment and work ethic.

So many people have masters and advanced degrees but often — in certain sectors — woefully underperform and are ill-equipped for those higher tier positions those degrees give them access to .

Hate to see it. :manny:

I will knock someone for choosing a dumb major, but if you're passionate enough about it, network and goto the market for that degree...also have enough sense to pair it with something more marketable. Language, STEM, Business.

The major isn’t the problem. She didn’t know what she wants to do with it.

True. Another problem is that alot of people are clueless about marketing themselves

I remember my friend got a Biology degree, and wasn't getting jobs. He took 4 statistics courses, and I told him to put on his resume that he got a BioStatistics degree

He told me, he "considered that lying" :dwillhuh::mjlol:
