Lost Tapes is definitely a album, it’s just made up of previously unreleased songs by Nas ....an album is defined by length and sometimes cost. Although these songs got dropped I would imagine at initial recording that no expense was spared

By that logic any Greatest Hits compilation can be considered an album.

Fact is it's not an album. It's basically one of those "Unreleased B-Sides and Rarities" compilation with some new songs like what always get put on those

I swear people only call it an album to try to increase his stats.

For me though you can't release some stuff that was out years prior and call that a new album cause it's not. It was a quick cash-in off the success of Stillmatic.

Idk where to even start with this bullshyt. GRODT has aged terribly. Nas shyt gets better on each listen, you gotta digest the lyrics.

fukk the lyrics. "Rappers I monkey flip em with the funky rhythm I be kicking" aged terribly also.

1) no one raps like that anymore
2) no one uses terms like "monkey flip you" or "funky rhythm" unless you still living in the 80's-early 90's
3) only songs that aged terribly on GRODT is PIMP, Wanksta and 21 questions... What up Gangsta, In Da Club, Many Men, Patiently Waiting, etc will never age badly.

Point is, Nas music is not something you can just throw on for any old ocassion. Not while you're driving, at the gym, at a party, at a cookout, etc. Music is supposed to be fun and exciting. I get that's not his lane, but still. 2pac did what Nas could do, but 10x better and more diverse. Nas is boring and puts you to sleep. But this is the internet where everything is reversed and y'all anti social nikkas want the world to be a certain way when it isn't. If I'm trapped on an island and can only listen to one artist, Nas would never come to mind. Everything ain't about lyrics. And if the beats suck and the lyrics are good I'm not gonna sit thru 3-4 minutes of a shytty beat just cuz you saying some dope shyt. Give me the full package or nothing at all. Y'all can disagree all you want but the proof is in the sales and where his songs/albums charted.

all 23 million miles of useful land
Let's look at his history real quick. Them joints he got with the Neptunes (Popular Thug, Nas's Angels, etc..) were trash. Most people agree that his work with Dr Dre (The Firm era, except Phone Tap) was very lackluster. His work with Timbaland (You owe me, etc...) is lackluster. All his shyt with Swizz has been garbage. His past work with Kanye has been solid, nothing groundbreaking but okay.

Then look at his shyt with Preme, and Large Professor, and Pete Rock, and Havoc, and LES when he is in his bag, etc...marriage made in heaven like 95% of the time.

That hip hop shyt, that traditional sound, that is his sweet spot. His most critically acclaimed albums (Illmatic, Lost Tapes, Stillmatic) got that texture, that hip hop shyt, that's his comfort zone and its obvious. He sounds off when he tries to do what Jayz does. I got Nas ahead of Jayz all time but Jayz is much more versatile musically, he can do a Preme beat dirty, then the next song is him doing a Timbaland beat dirty, then the next song is him doing a Kanye beat dirty, etc... He is like Biggie in a sense, they can make all different kinds of records with all types of tempos and shyt...but someone like Nas, or Rakim, or Gza or somebody, they have a sweet spot, that gritty hip hop shyt, it sounds off when they divert from it a lot of times.

Think of all your favorite Nas joints ever, I bet you none of them shyts are produced by a big commercial producer. Keep my man away from these commercial guys with these big and worldly productions and get him in there with the dudes that we all know we want to hear him with.

Lost Tapes is a compilation NOT a proper studio album.

Anyone arguing to the contrary is simply trolling.

Its a compilation that was made using unused songs from I am and Stillmatic

Doo Rags
No Ideas Original
Purple
Everybody’s Crazy
Black Zombie
Nothing Last Forever

Are from Stillmatic. Of the 5 I think it was said that Doo Rags was the closest to acuually making the retail release.

Blaze A 50
Drunk By Myself
Poppa Was A Player
Fetus
U Gotta Love It

Are from the original I am Double Disc sessions.

“So we had all these records now and nothing to do with them. And you know, usually I work on songs and some songs I’m just doing just to get a feel for being back in the studio. And still songs would leak. Or they would be put to the side, ’cause they wouldn’t be what I wanted to be on the final cut. And then we’d release the album and then we had records—you know, unfinished records: A verse on a beat, three verses on a beat with no chorus, one long verse on a beat. Whatever it was, we had no home for ’em. No place. Nuttin’ to do with ’em. They’re not records that I wanted on an album, just stuff that we had. So, you know, we started to think about Lost Tapes.”

From the man himsef.

Purple was another Stillmatic joint. I think Doo Rags was also for Stillmatic
This kinda solidified the point @Tactical was making about Nas historically not knowing which songs to leave on the album and which ones not to.

Like on Stillmatic. There is no excuse for songs like Purple, Doo Rags, and No Idea’s Original to not make the cut over fukkin Braveheart Party, My Country, and Rule

That’s inexcusable :martin:

And that’s saying a lot cuz Stillmatic is still a classic album, but that shyt would be better than illmatic if those 6 songs traded places.

Picture a track list like:

1. Stillmatic (The Intro)
2. Ether
3. Got Urself A...
4. Smokin
5. You’re Da Man
6. Rewind
7. One Mic
8. 2nd Childhood
9. Destroy & Rebuild
10. Doo Rags
11. The Flyest
12. No Idea’s Orginal
13. Purple
14. What Goes Around

That shyt might be the GOAT rap album right there :damn:

its considered an album because its arguably better than most of it not all of his other albums.

your b side tapes are only considered if they sound legit and not like a bunch of tracks scattered...his shyt played out like a true album.

For all intents and purposes, Lost Tapes is an album. There are albums with several songs on them from other sessions. HHID has songs that were meant for Street's Disciple ("Play On Playa" and "Not Going Back").

Nah this wasnt a top producer issue

Look, you can point to amazing records hes done with top producers and even more in the vault.

Its just a matter of focus and the bigger issue is he had nothing to rap about of substance even on the important records.

How old are you?

Damn near every person that ever listened to Get Rich or Die Tryin' regards it has a Hip-Hop classic, damn near top #10-30 Hip-Hop albums in that genre of all time.

If you truly don't like 50 then just know that your opinion is in the minority just like the other hermits on this forum.

I've noticed a correlation to the brehs with nearly 20K+ posts who obviously don't go outside to see sunshine are the most miserable.:sas2:

GRODT is a fukkin classic only insecure nas fan can deny that

Gimme 5 records he's done that are amazing with "Top" producers, and by "Top" I mean these super big commercial dudes that every rapper runs to.

For every 5 you give me I'll give you 15 amazing records he's done with producers who aren't the go-to guy when you need a big radio/club record

Obviously he has better records with those guys Im just saying he can still knock out a Phone Tap, Let there be Light, you wont see me tonight with those other guys

I just dont think Nas is or was immune to working with super producers, just depends on if hes invested or if they are trying to make Nas sound different
