It's like I'm happy one minute and then I'm sad the next, I hate working at my job,it's like I'm thankful for having a job but it doesn't make me happy..a feeling of dread..or a state of melancholy is what one might call it comes over me when it's time to go to work. I feel like it's always. Bills bills bills and I never have money to spend on myself and I have a newborn so it makes it worse. Don't get me wrong I love my baby girl like no other and wouldn't change a thing,it's just that I want to provide more for her. I'm enrolled in school now entering my 3rd semester but I feel like it's not taking off. I just feel stuck and it's becoming unbearable. I feel enslaved by bills and HAVING TO WORK.

Are you a man or woman?

Eta: never mind, you're a man I thought maybe it was postpartum depression.

Seek a professional to speak with. Idk where you live, but some cities have free counseling centers.

People end up feeling like this when they ignore their calling all their life and play into the hands of big corps, media, powers that be, others opinions, etc

You got to just BREATHE. Know that their will be ups and downs, and shyt, I think we have all had the THOUGHT of "fukk life" or "fukk this world" but don't fight nor give into emotions, acknowledge them and deal with them in healthy ways, get a punching bag, workout, go to a wooded area and scream if you must.

We all come here to better something within our spirits, find your calling and do what you know you need to do, it may take some searching but, do it.

Pretty sad it's 2014 and people still don't understand things like depression. For some people it's a lifelong battle, plain and simple. I read all these ignorant replies in here and I'm repulsed.

Someone with depression/chemical imbalance can't just "man up" and it doesnt juat disappear through religion or some shyt.

Real depression changes the way your brain functions. And modern medicine can assist but there is no cure. None.

We are on the internet with the worlds information at our fingertips and people choose to be ignorant.

Get help breh....things get rough but as long as you recgnize what you got you'll be happy. It's hard to get motivated sometimes as life puts us in traps where we feel we can't get ourselves out of...but recognizing the possibility of their actually being a light at the end of the tunnel can be enough to restore some semblance of hope for ourselves.

I don't like talking about it too much, but I was suicidal years ago when I was in college. Stressed out with so much stuff. I felt like life was going nowhere...then I graduated and life got better...somewhat. Not where I'd like to be but working there.

They say suicide is selfish and their right. I remember what caused me to not want to finally murk myself that night years ago. I thought about my family not having me in their lives anymore and broke down crying thinking about that stress that would cause them. To this day I'm happy to have them in my life.

You have a kid though...I don't. I wouldn't do that because that kid needs you as their father in their life. That's a different deal...and if anything should be your motivation to do better. I don't know what it's like and I wouldn't pretend to know...but how would you feel knowing that your kids would grow up with a void in their lives cause of your absence? not knowing you or having memories of you...and what that may cause in the future?

Think about those people around you that would lose a bit of their lives and a piece of their souls if your presence left suddenly never to return. We don't recognize our impact to people around us other than in hindsight.

I've dealt with depression before...it sucks. But it is possible to deal with and overcome to an extent. One of the hardest things about depression is knowing that it will never leave 100%...but there are happy moments and sad moments. How do you choose to see the world and life? I'd rather focus on the happier moments than pontificate upon the sad ones.

As someone who has suffered from depression for years let me tell you that once you have reached a certain point the only thing that can get you out of the hole is MEDICATION, that may take 3 months to a year...

So go see a doc and fully express your feelings...
2nd one thing you can work on immediately is look at your finances and look at the way you spend your money...
You have a newborn now so you are in a new situation, bruh you need to come to a realization that FRESH, HOT, NEW is no longer apart of your wardrobe or vocabulary...

Hope things get better fam...

It seems that you've started putting so much pressure on yourself with regard to being a new father. I think the feeling of suddenly having another life to care for has added stress. I think the realization that a job is now mandatory (whether you like it or not) has sent you into quarter/early life crisis. You should talk to someone and also try to regroup. Yes you have another mouth to feed but with planning and patience, you can still make it to where you want to go in life.

There's so much help out there for u man, u shouldn't suffer. Get out there and get proper treatment.

Whatever u do, do not take pills prescription or not unless its a last resort. I believe corrective behavior therapy, along with diet, exercise and talking it out will help u out.

Depression is like cancer of the mind. We don't even understand how the human brain works 100% so I'm not surprised that people are ignorant to the true nature of depression.

The bolded is so true. Western Society looks at depression as a "defect" or as a "weakness" rather than as an actual mental disorder. This society promotes a "cheer up" "always be happy" environment where any semblance of feelings or humanity is looked at weird in this consumerist environment where people are expected to work their lives away to keep a roof over their heads and food on their tables...that in itself can exhibit depressive moments and episodes.

Also, I'm really surprised by these responses too...especially considering that this is a predominantly black board and our people are probably more predisposed to depression more than any other races of people. Considering that most black people have been conditioned by ourselves and others to be viewed upon as inferior living in an environment where the means of control are owned and operated by the same people that put us in these positions where our involvement only helps them to survive and continue to flourish. Also with the stigmatization involved in being a visible minority...etc etc...yadda yadda yadda.

That's why them "only white women get depressed" ass nikkas are embarassing in my eyes and couldn't come off as dumber. You think a people that have been held down systematically in the global society for hundreds of years and are still collectively trying to be seen as equal are just going to be happy in the midsts of white supremacy? F*ck no.

What you need to do is sit down, take some time, write down exactly the areas of life in which you are dissatisfied and then construct a plan to bring each and every one of those elements up to par.

Don't worry about not being at a 'certain point' at your age. It's all about accepting where you are and working on that aspect of your life.

A lot of your concerns seem to come from that job you are working. A toxic work environment will have a huge effect on your emotions. If you wake up dreading to go to work, it's time to start looking for new options, even if it means you have to cut back a bit. With school, don't worry about rushing it. Just keep at it and sooner or later it will be done. One of the biggest sources of stress is when we imagine that we should 'be at a certain point' in life at a certain age and then mentally beat ourselves up because we aren't. Ignore the social conditioning that says you need this or that at such and such age. It's a cause of unnecessary stress and will do nothing to help you out.

We live in difficult economic times, so it's not easy to be where we are 'supposed to be', which is a nonsensical concept in the first place. More than anything, you should start exploring different aspects and see what you actually like to do, and when you do, you need to go 200% on that. I'm telling you that just liking to come into work makes a monumental difference on your life, especially since you're likely to spend more of your waking hours there than anywhere else.

God bless.

The ignorance towards mental health issues is astounding.

Depression like other mental disorders has a stigma. People are scared to admit to it or seek help because they don't want to be seen as weak.

It's a vicious cycle because without some form of treatment it just gets worse.

Then people like OP open up and are given TERRIBLE advice. Smoking weed can make depression even worse and also lead to anxiety.

People saying man up makes the person feel weak or delude themselves into thinking they can beat it with will power.

Thing is depression literally rewires the way your brain processes information.

Most people don't know that or care to know. A depressed brain literally filters your days information just to re-enforce the depression. They could hear 99 compliments in a day and 1 insult and the ONLY thing they will remember is the insult. It's not the persons fault. They arent being negative, their brain is doing it to them.

Often times the people too scared to talk about it in real life will try to online. So posters making rude comments need to chill. Depressed people are basically walking dynamite and one heartless comment cantrigger can cause them to harm themself.
