If Aaliyah was still here, do you think she would be the best female artist in R&B/Pop right now?

By 99 we knew bey would be solo, when she dropped in 03 we knew she was gonna be huge, and when she had one album dominate from 06-08, it was clear it was her world....Aaliyah was popular but never pulled to the front of her pack they way bey did. EVERY SINGLE release from 98-06 put beyonce another step ahead, Aaliyah moved ahead with one and a million and was at the same place with the Aaliyah album
:what:She Died ONE month after the album came out

'99 was the beginning. She was featured as Beyonce Knowles on the Missy album that came out that year and she was the love interest in Case's video. Solo career was pretty much a given at that point especially since it also marked the beginning of Destiny's Child dissolving.
She became solo in 03... in 99 she was soley the lead singer for Destiny Childs....
From 99-02 Destiny Childs was bigger than Beyonce. More ppl knew who Destiny Child was, than Beyonce...
Beyonce wasn't a factor as a solo artist until after Aaliyah died.

This doesn't make sense. Beyonce as "Beyonce" was not known in the 90s. Destinys Child released their last album in 2004 and Beyonce didn't release her first solo until 2003

Like dude said....Aaliyah came in the game rocking baggy clothes....well which females we all know was doing that first? it damn sure wasn't en vogue.....Mary wasn't doing that either. Even Beyonce and her crew were caught up in 1993 looking like TLC clones.

Mary set the tone by being the first female "Hip Hop Soul" artist to rock throwbacks jerseys and combat boots.

SWV followed. There was also Smooth at the time, sho could rap and sing, and her trademark was saggy jeans and her thong being revealed. Many then compared Aaliyah to Smooth.

Xscape debut album fall of 93, Aaliyah in spring 94...they weren't that far apart, but Aaliyah in the tommy sports bras and baggy pants was much more influential than xscape in combat boots and plaid, mary j blige brought that look to the female scene in 91/92 (influenced by puff/uptown/jodeci).

:snoop:
No....TLC was doing combat boots first

Both ya'll just making up shyt so again I have to school ya'll about 90's urban music history.

Now look at the date of TLCs first single....

compared to marys first single....

yes mary did the jersey thing first but the baggy clothes and boots was TLC first

And to the fool who saying Xscapes debut and Aaliyahs wasn't that far apart.....Do it the right way and compare fall 91 to spring 94......thats a very big gap buddy....and its a gap for influence....to the other cat who said Jodecs uptown look influenced the baggy shyt...no...it was the hood that was doing it first....now if u wanna say Jodeci influenced TLC that would still be irrelevant cuz 1) Jodeci and TLCs debut isn't that far apart to were u could say one influenced the other unless u were reaching and 2) Jodeci got it from the hood and TLC are still the first "females" to do it on a major level visually...hence the reason I said from jump that TLC influenced that baggy look for Aaliyah.

Not to get technical friend, but those are SINGLES retail release dates, those are not promo video release dates.

My recollection is that Mary's "You Remind Me" video was released before the "Ain't To Proud To Beg" video. "You Remind Me" was not only floating around on mix shows earlier in '91, but it was also released on the Strictly Business soundtrack in '91 along with Jeff Redd's "You Called And Told Me" getting major airplay.

To be honest, I'm not even sure LaFace came with a video on TLC before the release of the single to radio, then to retail. I think Keith Ward was the director of "Aint To Proud To Beg" and he did a great job.

She was the first of them to be featured on songs. I'm not sure about anyone else, but I knew her name before I knew any of the other members.

As crazy as it is, they put out a Kelly solo first on the strength of her feature on Nelly's song.

nikka I'm turning 34 in a month. @dora_da_destroyer been schooling yall in this thread and I co-sign everything the brehette is saying.

Some of yall nikkas talking bout you know how it was gonna be like you got inside info. nikkas caught up in the hype of her being dead.

Same type of nikkas who claim Big L would've been top 10 had he lived when in reality he would've been just another mixtape rapper.

:mjlol:
Your recollection is wrong. And backwards as fukk.

Me and half my school went to HMV to get autographs from TLC...i told this story before....the only song they had was Aint To Proud To beg.....They didnt even realy blow up blow up yet.....they told us the freinds song would be the second single but instead the 2nd single turned out to be Baby baby Baby.....none of us had even heard of Mary J Blige around this time.....this was Black history month because i remember we had a Black history play..and this girl i liked was impressed with the square photo that one of tlcs peoples was stapling on everyones coat who was standing on line.......you remind me came out around the time i started fukking my second girlfriend.....I remember how Baby baby baby was also already out around this time...I remember because those fanatasys i had of Left Eye wer heavy on me while i layed in the top of my bunk bed......this was all before i left Harlem and moved to The Bx which was in july.

I still have that autograph black and white photo by the way.....some of the letters faded when i rubbed it years ago but i still have it.

Like being a Black female has anything to do with what the climate was back then :heh: or you wouldn't be spewing this nonsense. If really knew what was up you'd know her earning that Queen of the Damned LEAD role was huge. Almost like Beyonce getting a role in AP: Gold Member in a high profile movie which (dropped Crazy in Love not too long after) Aaliyah was doing when she passed. IAaliyah was laying that same foundation before she died. But you're a Black female & that carries more weight then what I'm saying :pachaha:
And all you're doing is guessing what might've happened & you sound foolish with your assumptions because we'll never know. None of my posts had any assumptions either unlike you.
No one is arguing what happened then...she was popular in 01, as were many other artists who feel the fukk off since then. And the premise of the fukking thread is to take a guess at where Aaliyah would be now. All signs point to her musical prime being a thing of the past. My first post in this thread already conceded she'd probably be more into acting right now, how that career would pan out, who knows.

Destiny Child was FOR Beyonce, true. That's a given. But in 99' NOBODY knew she would be who she is TODAY. That's a damn lie!

In 99', Whitney was still Whitney, even though her best material was behind her. Mariah was still Mariah even though she was bout to flip out. Brandy was still doing her thing. Monica was doing her thing.

So don't sit here and act like Beyonce' has always been "Queen Bey", cause that ain't the case, lol.

Beyonce's team, is far greater than her actual talent. They've done wonders for her career. Another factor is the industry itself. Music and the bar has been lowered so much, what Beyonce does now is deemed "brilliant", "magnificent" and "groundbreaking".... nikka, please lmao
If you got from my post that people knew bey would be who she is today, you have very few comprehension skills. We knew she'd be a solo star, she achieved that and more. And I have never called her music any of those adjectives so if you're gonna reply to me, keep it to the facts I've stated. Bey's talent is magnificent, her music, no.

Lastly, you wanna talk teams, Aaliyah's fukking uncle owned the records label who got her started, hooked her up with kellz recovered her career after the scandal and get her with timbaland. Aaliyah had just as powerful a team. I don't know why y'all act like bey always had squad on her side, she had a joe Jackson dad with a vision and they made it happen. Once she became a proven winner, she was able to have anyone at her service - that same as any artist. Aaliyah was the niece to an actual industry executive who pushed her where she needed to be.

This Whitney Mariah thing is exactly why we're saying she wouldn't be dominating today. Mariah is not the chart breaker she once was, but she gets props based on two decades of work prior. Aaliyah would be like brandy and Monica, you get your salute because people remember who you were at one time, but like they are now, your accolades become a nod to your past, not present.
