If Aaliyah was still here, do you think she would be the best female artist in R&B/Pop right now?

Why are people acting like Aaliyah wasn't a star in 2001? :dahell: Ashanti's run went from 2001 to 2002. Aaliyah's went from 1994 to 2001. She had longevity.

And Brandys career went downhill because she lied about her marriage and her management had no idea how to market her after Moesha ended and she was no longer in her teenage years. Aaliyah somehow managed to avoid this, she had a smooth transition from teen to adult whereas Brandy' s was awkward and hard on her.

I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing. I said she made timeless music and would age (looks wise) like Ashanti...Ashanti still looks good incase you missed what I meant :shaq:

I was agreeing with you breh:salute:Since you mentioned Ashanti I was just saying its amazing how much they're compared when they have nothing in common over both of them doing RnB and being beautiful :win:

Aaliyah was the third wheel behind Monica and Brandy and aaliyah

Why do people keep peddling this lie? On what planet was MONICA bigger than Aaliyah? People are seriously perpetuating the lie that Aaliyah was a complete nobody until she died. Her first song was a hit and her sophomore album followed suit. She was well received in the RnB community especially because that's what the demographic/lane that her music was, everyone knew exactly who she was. Aaliyah did a Tommy Hilfiger campaign and performed at the Oscars - so how was she unknown? The success of Are You That Somebody and Try Again are not reflected in Monica's "Angel of Mine". Aaliyah's hits were bigger and still to this very day get more rotation. In fact Monica's biggest song, The Boy is Mine, is a duet with Brandy, and Brandy's peak was when the song came out, so that single primarily rode the airwaves off the strength of Brandy's unstoppable run from 97-98. Monica's biggest song was in due part to Brandy's stardom, other than that single Monica does not have a list of songs or albums that outperformed Aaliyah's catalog. Monica was never bigger than Aaliyah. Aaliyah was a star in 2001. Watch that VMA red carpet clip and pay attention to who was interviewing who. If Beyonce was Aaliyah's understudy on that red carpet then what makes you think Monica was bigger than Aaliyah?

And if we are being honest Beyonce was already bigger than her by the time she died if we are being truthful since Beyonce had already had an 5X platinum album with Destiny Child second Lp and was coming off the Survivor LP and Bootylicious during that summer and Aaliyah's LP was flopping none of her songs of that Lp were sticking til she died.

Once again you're trying to diminish Aaliyah's stardom and popularity. She held her own as a single act and did just fine. Stop trying to make it seem as if she was some underground one hit wonder. She had a hit film and 2 multiplatinum albums. She was one of the staple RnB acts and a revered celebrity, not some R Kelly backup dancer that mysteriously managed to last more than a year. She was only getting bigger.

By the way, I truly don't give a dang about record sales because in no way are they an indication of the quality of an artist's music. Britney Spear's music is atrocious and it sold like hot cakes back then. Aaliyah might've sold less than Beyonce, but the quality of her music has withstood time and sounds innovative still to this day. She did what an artist is supposed to do which is make good music, not spew out robotic teen pop garbage to buckdance for the white audience.

She was an awesome artist which is why she was a well known star even before her death.

Aaliyah seemed like she would've lasted cause she wasn't afraid to take risks when it comes to the music. What these female artists are doing now sonic wise by taking risks I think Aaliyah would've been did that already. She was starting to hand over the musical director job to Static Major instead of Timbaland so it would've been interesting.

Monica had three #1 songs in a row. You acting like Monica didnt have hits. Monica was the better singer too.

TBH Aaliyah and Monica had the same type of popularity. Neither really had per say the crossover success like Brandy did.

Monica was a better singer than both Brandy and Aaliyah. Yes, she had hits, huge hits, but wasn't as popular. She did prove to have more longevity than Brandy. That's why music is unpredictable. No one ever would've guesses Monica would've been bigger than Brandy on the '00's. What's funny is that a huge part of Monica's longevity is Missy Elliott.

Monica had three #1 singles: "First Night", "Angel of Mine" and "The Boy Is Mine". The singles just didn't do for her sales what Brandy's did for her's.

Aaliyah was more of an impact artist from what I could see. "One In A Million" and "Are You That Somebody" were game changers. Those are songs that wouldn't have worked for anyone else. According to Tim, the beats that she picked was always some of his more left field work.

What endears people to Aaliyah is the mystery and mystique. With Timbaland, she found a sound that matched her personality. Her personality bled over into the music and that's what gives music its soul. That's the key difference from Beyonce and Aaliyah. Beyonce's personality comes alive on the stage vs. on record. With Aaliyah, its the opposite.

lol. youre always so out-of-touch.

everybody who understood music, knew that monica was gonna have the best adult MUSIC career out of all the female teen singers from back then. theres nothing surprising or unpredictable about it. youre just out-the-loop as usual.

and shoutout to @krazykid18 for sonnin' your dumbass while I was gone.

This doesn't even make sense. Its a backwards comparison

How so? Aaliyah and Ciara are both similar singers as far as range goes (Ciara doesn't have much range and Aaliyah didn't have much), and Ciara is by far the better dancer.

What was dumb about it? Give specifics rather than throwing out random ad hominems like a child. I'll be anticipating a breakdown of this.
