If Aaliyah was still here, do you think she would be the best female artist in R&B/Pop right now?

lol Aaliyah was not on Beyoncé category. She couldn't sing or dance anywhere near Beyoncé.
She was more Ashanti type.
Beyonce in 2001 couldnt sing and dance anywhere near the Beyonce of the past 7-8 years...its called improvement..
in 2001 Aaliyah was a better dancer and singer than Bey.

Aaliyah was a way better singer and dancer than Ashanti... Ashanti a waaaaay better writer than both.

My nicca Wack in here still tryna vigorously convince niccas Aaliyah was some underground Z list artist :dead:

when did I say that?:dahell:

Aaliyah was just starting to warm up before she died. Yeah she had been on the scene since she was teenager but she really hadn't even reached her full potential when she died. Beyonce is a stronger singer than Aaliyah though they have different registers but I could "feel" Aaliyah's singing more. It seemed genuine. Beyonce's singing is just *there* to me.

Aaliyah died in 2001.

her peak was in 1997.

and that peak was nowhere near high enough to warrant this thread title

Beyonce can sing and dance. I just don't "feel" her singing. Only on 1 hand can I count the number of songs I've actually liked by her and it's like 3.

Dancing, yeah she good at that. She puts on 1 helluva show. But again, the vocals are just *there*.

I'm not saying she ain't talented, I just don't think she all that.

I hate to break it to you, but Aaliyah couldn't sing for chit.

you think you feel her singing more. you just like her style & the beats she used, as she was more accessible to hip-hop crowds.

what promo runs did brandy & monica do for soundtracks in the midst of their lengthier hiatuses? and I'm talking the hiatuses in between their 2nd & 3rd albums. let me be clear. and don't talk out ya ass and try to make chit up, like you often do on here - and don't pretend that I'm the only one that calls you out on that, you little worm you.

the bolded is a pointless observation. and I actually kinda liked Aaliyah when she was alive. I was no fan, but she was a cool lil novelty act. she wasn't as good or as big as brandy, but brandy was annoying, phoney & over-saturated.

I'm definitely a cultural gatekeeper on here. youre just mad that youre not, no matter how hard you try.

Breh, Brandy nor Monica had lengthier hiatuses between albums. You can't add or are hard of comprehending:

Brandy dropped Brandy in late Summer/Fall 1994. Never Say Never dropped in the summer of '98. Full Moon dropped early 2002. That is 3.5 to 4 years max in between albums.

Monica dropped Miss Thang in '95. The Boy Is Mine dropped in 1998. All Eyez On Me was completed and dropped in Japan in 2002, but was shelved in the U.S. That album was re-worked and released as After The Storm in 2003. That's 3.5-4 years max between albums.

Aaliyah dropped Age Ain't Nothing But A Number in the Spring of '94. One In A Million dropped in late Summer of '96. Aaliyah dropped in 2001. Aaliyah had a 5 year difference between her sophomore and third albums, please explain how Monica and Brandy had lengthier hiatuses between albums.

Monica performing "Just Another Girl":

Brandy performing "Sittin' In My Room":

You should try looking up the word novelty. It's clear you like using words you don't know the definition of because you've used novelty act to describe an artist who had their biggest hit 6 years into their career. Novelty acts are artists like Mokensteff, Sunshine Anderson, Blu Cantrell, etc.

Breh, you aren't a cultural gate keeper. I could care less about being a gate keeper. I'm simply a poster expressing my opinion on a message board just like everybody else on here. Unlike you, my value and self worth isn't connected to a character on a message board.

Rewrite.

"Try Again" was the first song ever to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 based solely on the strength of its radio airplay.[12] "Try Again" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 43rd Grammy Awards,[12] while its music video won two MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video and Best Video from a Film.[19] The song was also nominated on the seventh annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards in the category of Song of the Year; however, Aaliyah lost to gospel artist Yolanda Adams.[20]

youre taking this thread backwards and re-hashing the same ole arguments that already got shut down by everybody.

Aaliyah didn't take no dam 5 year hiatus. she was promoting soundtracks in between those albums.

claim Aaliyah went on hiatus between '96-01, and then in your next post, claim that Aaliyah peaked in '99 brehs.

youre a dam dikkhead. youre definitely going ON IGNORE now. don't waste your time typing up a reply. YOURE ON IGNORE for this dumb chit.

and for the record, that's not Aaliyah's peak.

she scored a crossover hit in a weaker year and got some crossover accolades. but when people think of Aaliyah, the first thing that comes to mind, isn't that dam song.

1st thing that comes to mind is her run with the 2nd album, and then the 1st album.

i know youre numb to things like that, but just know her peak was in '97.

Nah, breh, you said Brandy and Monica had lengthier "hiatuses", I pointed out the intervals between each of their albums.

And again, you're ignorant, biased, and dense if you're saying Aaliyah didn't take a 5 year hiatus, but are ignoring the promo and Soundtrack singles that Brandy and Monica did during the same period. And note, as I have made clear several time, I said "hiatus between albums".

How was 2000 a weaker year? Scoring a crossover hit in the year 2000 was no easy feat for an R&B artist.

How exactly do you know what's the first thing to come to mind when people think of Aaliyah. She had a third album as well, that is held in higher regard than the first.

Exactly.

Even crazier is that dude has erased Brandy's and Monica's soundtrack singles and promo for said singles in order to justify them having lengthier hiatuses. Then on top of that, he's in here questioning how Aaliyah had a 5 year hiatus because she had soundtrack singles and did promo runs for them. Like Brandy and Monica didn't do the same. Then writing Aaliyah off as a novelty act, when her biggest records came later in her career.

I agree...I remeber when Bey was stand still in her videos cause she wàsnt a dancer. I remember when Bey wasnt even the second best singer in destiny childs...
ppl dont understand Bey BECAME GREAT. she BECAME what she is today... at 2000/2001 Aaliyah was a bigger artist and a better artist singer, and dancer than Bey... its not farfetched To believe that Aaliyah couldnt continue to improve And be a factor in todays industry.

I can tell that youre not really in tune with r&b like that. its painfully obvious, so don't play yourself.

I could say more, but i'll just say that the proof is in the pudding. look at the lack of interest heading into her album in 2001. if the year 2000 was really her peak, then things would've been different when she came right back with that album.

also, the songs that youre mentioning; the latter two weren't even that big. meanwhile, youre ignoring the real gem in "i don't wanna". SMH. you don't even know how to argue your case properly. its clear that you were just some hip-hoppity virgin that just liked timbaland beats.

also, "try again" and "are you that somebody" were big hits, but her original fanbase was getting older, while she was going backwards with those tracks.

now I'm convinced that you weren't even around at all back then.

LOL.

nikka said weak year... :gucci:wtf is a weak year???

nikkas are just making shyt up...

in comparison to the years that preceeded it.

the fact that I have to explain that comment, tells me all I need to know about you.

Aaliyah fans yall. TYPICAL.

Aaliyah was never a better dancer or singer than Beyonce. Aaliyah's choreography was always very basic and her vocals was never that strong and she usually sung in that low tone like Janet Jackson. She was also not waaaayy better than Ashanti at anything. I don't know why y'all trying to elevate her to some type of goat status because she died.

only thing Aaliyah did better than ashanti was dance. and that's by default.

ashanti came out & immediately passed Aaliyah's entire legacy with her debut. she even outsold Aaliyah's death.
