Think about it. Atlanta going into last summer was over 63 million with no mobility.
Joe Johnson has a crazy big contract.
We had an injury prone Marvin Williams who produced at times but nothing to warrant his deal.
Josh Smith was constantly complaining.
We just got knocked out of the 1st round to Boston which was the 1st time we didn't make the 2nd round since our lost to Boston in 2009.
We hired Danny Ferry. He was hyped to be the best GM talent in the NBA. Other GM's lauded him and his time with Cleveland earned him great merit with his peers.
I didn't know what to expect. I am like, we're stuck and boring.
Then we trade Joe Johnson for a lot of scrubs, a 1st round pick from HOU that we only get if they make the playoffs which didn't look likely at the time. Remember, no Harden, Aisk or Lin. They still had Scola and Martin. Also we got two draft pick swaps for 2014 and 2015 but that too didn't look good since we are likely going to be worse than Brooklyn in 2014 and 2015 at the time.
I was looking at the trade mixed. We got rid of Joe's contract but where are we going.
We are too good to suck and too sorry now to be good. We aren't even a stud away anymore
Then we trade Marvin Williams for Devin Harris. I seen this trade as a wash at the time because Marvin had value to me as a legit SF who can defend and hit the corner three. Harris on the other hand was a PG who was more of a combo guard who I was unsure about. I seen that Harris had great PnR numbers in Jersey and hoped for the best at time since our PG was ass at being a real PG. Talented player but bad PG.
What this did was clear up a lot of cap space for us which meant we can sign two max players. Problem was, Dwight was traded to LA which has history and now Dwight to go with names like Nash, Kobe, and Gasol. Now you seen Gasol and Kobe getting worse but Nash was still playing at an all star level and Kobe was still very good. Not sure how it was going to work since the pieces don't fit but with the names being so massive, I though what's the worst that is going to happen.
CP3 was going into his 2nd year with LAC. I didn't think they were a contender but I assumed that he wouldn't leave LAC. They have ample talent and they are extremely fun to watch.
Bynum was another player I was liked a tad but Philly loved him and thought he would change their franchise as a cornerstone player.
So, we had a lot of money coming in 2013, a stud in Horford, an extremely talent low BBIQ tweener in Smith and a bunch of role players.
I was like,
. We ain't getting Dwight or CP3. Nor Bynum. We have to spent 20 mil and we aren't that good. I wasn't expecting much and was thinking about how hard do I want to be a Hawk fan. We are going nowhere. Ferry did a decent job but what was the cause. Brooklyn is now us if not better.
Well, the season happened. The Lakers looked like old shyt. Rockets traded for Harden, made the playoffs. CP3 doesn't get alone with Blake and DJ and is pissed at ownership. Horford finished the 2nd half of the season avg 20/10 during that stretch and getting 2 1st place All NBA votes. We still have two max deals money as well as two 1st round picks and two 2nd's.
Word has it that Dwight and CP3 and testing all options and Atlanta is at the top of the list if we can get both players which is possible.
We also get to swap 2014 and 2015 picks with Brooklyn.
We also get to keep Lou and Horf as pieces and John Jenkins fits like a glove with Dwight and CP3. Not to mention we still have a MLE as well.
Danny Ferry can build a dynasty. They say Rome wasn't built in one day but they didn't have Danny Ferry getting the contracts to build.
My question to you is, if Ferry lands both CP3 and D12 is he the greatest GM of all time?
