remember...the Israelites in the old testament warred with other city states in Canaan whom had various gods as their namesakes (Jericho - Yarikh, Tyre - Malek Bel, Nineveh - Hadad), the way they speak of the outsiders is reflected in this.

be wary of context because people then were defiant in light of a problem we dont really see anymore (gruesome child sacrifice and blood/sex rituals).
