As someone sympathetic to a non-deterministic conception of free will, this isn't the best argument. I agree that it breaks from a literal view of determinism, but I don't think it carries a lot of weight beyond that, and it still doesn't give much autonomy to the agent, which I'd assume is why you'd argue libertarian free will in the first place.

My argument is that there is a testable mechanism FOR 'free will' that is dependent upon the agent's 'consciousness'.

'Not much autonomy' > no autonomy.

As far as what 'consciousness' is.............:manny:

I've also had to re-evaluate my view of Materialism and am moving more towards Idealism.

Now I now whenever I go to court make sure I go on Mon-Thurs because the burden is on the Prosecution to prove i did it (and once i add reasonable doubt i'm good)... Because on Friday I have to proof I didnt do it.

Well, I was being coy with "not much autonomy", I should've just said no autonomy.

My brain state can be affected in such a way that quantum effects have real efficacy over a 100% causal determinism. But that's not shifting the burden of materialism off the brain/self/consciousness/soul/whatever. If someone is arguing to me that me being "happy" is an electron shooting down a certain ion channel, we can choose a basis state for that electron, and see that it is in fact probabilistic, but it's still working deterministically once that basis state is chosen.

And again, I don't think I'm a strict materialist myself, but I don't think that paper is the best way out of that.

I'm curious on how the Christians in this thread feel about premarital sex?

Every parent has plans for their children and will do everything possible to steer them in the direction they feel is best for them. It's up to the child whether or not to trust the parent and follow the plan.
