what's wrong listening to r&b? still doesnt take away the fact that illmatic flopped. and boyz II men second album :wow:
There's no doubt Illmatic sales were somewhat disappointing at the time, even though no one gave a shyt about sales back then. The album was not female friendly and was extremely raw. It's still arguably the best album ever created

Please tell me what song is wack on Illmatic? Better yet, tell me what verse is wack?

I woke up early on my born day; I'm 20, it's a blessing
The essence of adolescence leaves my body, now I'm fresh and
My physical frame is celebrated cause I made it
One quarter through life some Godly-like thing created
Got rhymes 365 days annual plus some
Load up the mic and bust one, cuss while I pus from
My skull cause it's pain in my brain vein, money maintain
Don't go against the grain, simple and plain
When I was young, at this I used to do my thing hard
Robbin foreigners, take their wallets, their jewels, and rip their green cards
Dipped to the projects flashing my quick cash and
Got my first piece of ass smokin blunts with hash
Now it's all about cash in abundance
nikkas I used to run with is rich or doing years in the hundreds
I switched my motto; instead of saying "fukk tomorrow"
That buck that bought a bottle could've struck the lotto
Once I stood on the block, loose cracks produce stacks
I cooked up and cut small pieces to get my loot back
Time is Illmatic, keep static like wool fabric
Pack a 4-matic to crack your whole cabbage

I bought Illmatic off the strength of It Aint Hard To Tell, junior year in high school. Heard the shyt on the radio, Source blew it up, gave it a dope review, loved the MJ sample waaay back then. Me personally, I fukked with it at the time. Same shyt with Ready To Die, remember tellin fools about Juicy when NOBODY knew who/what the fukk I was talkin about before it blew up:aicmon:

I'm from Cali, not a lottta mutafukkaz fukked with Illmatic from around my way. Cats in the street and up at the school wasn't playin it at all. It wasn't until I went away to college down south the following year, you had nikkaz from all over the country going to school n playin ball. Damn near every East Coast cat up at the school had Illmatic and 36 Chambers in their rotation, damn near EVERYBODY is gonna rep their particular city/area.

But the selection of albums you had to choose from that year......GOTDAMN, if you loved rap and was a hip hop head, had you ear GLUED to the radio, caught every single video.....nikka, you was eatin:damn:

Summer of 94' I had to get a physical or somethin before two a days started.....Got the number of this bad ass nurse that was 27 years old with an ass in some tight ass scrubs that a nikka would take a bullet for. I had just turned 17. Left the appointment, went to the mall and picked this album up that I've been playin ever since that day.

Now is it just nostalgia and all that ass on that nurse, or did this album BANG just as hard as it did when this muthafukka dropped summer of 94?

I know this is an Illmatic thread and muthfukkaz ride for it on here, but there was so much shyt that dropped that year.....Man, we all went deep to the mall n bought this shyt when it came out. Went away to college and EVERY down south nikka had this tape :russ:

It's probable that Interscope isn't paying for certs because newer pressings of the album (as of 2003) were distributed by another label. It's not that they don't mean much, but it wouldn't make sense for them to pay for something that was distributed by Koch. I think the whole Death Row catalog became property of Koch in 2003 which would explain why Pac's AEOM is still stuck at 9X Platinum.

With Columbia, the certs mattered. It's not much of a coincidence that they'd ship additional copies of Illmatic to stores on the eve of It Was Written to get a gold certification for 500K shipped.

I can do that for virtually any album, Snoop's wasn't the point.

After a certain amount of time things stop being certified, because it's not that important. Or, there is huge gaps between when they're certified, because again, this isn't the #1 priority for a lot of labels.
But here we are in 2015 talking about what was hot 20 years ago, based on the RIAA site. shyt is :mjlol:

Illmatic had some industry endorsements but it's not comparable to the corporate push that Kendrick Lamar has.
Illmatic was made for hardcore fans of the genre, as was pointed out earlier. It was never supposed to go platinum. Nas didn't even attempt to go mainstream until his second album.

Futhermore, "mainstream" in those days is not comparable to mainstream today. Hip-Hop didn't become a popular genre with white people until circa 2000.

Everything is truth, particularly the bolded. Something the newbies among us wont understand.

I was listening to rap heavy by '97 and I remember people NOT fukkING with rap. In your face, fukk-this-genre type of attitude. Racist opinions. I watched those same people, circa 2000, suddenly become "hip hop fans."

This is why anything post-1996 is questionable and requires extra scrutiny. There have been classic albums and songs since then, but not as much as hip hop prior to that.

Theres not a single standout verse on the album. About 5 good segments of rappin on the entire album. shyt is complete garbage.
What year did you first hear the album? You can't appreciate Jordan highlight reels in 2015. Takes nothing away from Jordan though. If you don't like it, you don't like it. My point is you-- don't matter.
