Good look on the links. After a quick browse of a few message boards...ran across this link..."The Top 10 Rappers of the 90's"...made in '97.

And what do we have here...K-Rino at the very top of someone's GOAT list as far back 1997 @The Ruler 09 :leon:

I never thought about it before from this angle until the homie @intilectual recipricol brought it up...but it's very possible that Jay line in the Takeover pretty much created mythos of Illmatic being a quality rap album :ohhh:

@The Ruler 09

I believe this is thread-worthy homie :lolbron:

Read the thread he posted. It's actually :mjlol:
The people posting literally had no clue what the fukk they were talking about. Dude's in 97 claiming :takedat:, DJ Kool and Nate Dogg were the best rappers :mjlol:
Thread starter may have been the :troll:prototype come to think of it :ohhh:

Mid-90s was about selling gangsta rap CDs to all those suburban White kids who thought those he/she 80s hair bands were played out. You want to piss off Daddy, don't play some Death Leopard. Play some breu from the Bronx talking about sticking up daddy for his jewels.

Art is the decoration of space, music is the decoration of time. Illmatic decorated and STILL decorates.

Illmatic had some industry endorsements but it's not comparable to the corporate push that Kendrick Lamar has.
Illmatic was made for hardcore fans of the genre, as was pointed out earlier. It was never supposed to go platinum. Nas didn't even attempt to go mainstream until his second album.

Futhermore, "mainstream" in those days is not comparable to mainstream today. Hip-Hop didn't become a popular genre with white people until circa 2000.
