It would be one thing if you came up in NY during that period and thought that...but the fact that you're not from there and thought bootlegging was any different than any other urban/inner city area is suspect

Every other major label rapper were getting their albums certified except for Nas...and Columbia records was too poor to afford certification for his albums until 1996...his album was also the only rap album being bootlegged out of New York in until 1996.

I never thought about it before from this angle until the homie @intilectual recipricol brought it up...but it's very possible that Jay line in the Takeover pretty much created mythos of Illmatic being a quality rap album
