Clear. But you're still wrong for blaming the climate on the lack of initial success nas had. Other nikkas came out before and surrounding him that were much more successful,biggie being a prime example.

I wasn't even talking just about Illmatic really because illmatic unsucess on the chart IS an anomally and partially due to heavy bootleging and early leaking but even if Illmatic WAS successul it would mean gold and that's it.

The other NY (and put the emphasis on NY) rappers or groups that were doing it on the charts were only going gold, it was the standard. Biggie and Method Man (but he had the wu tang exposure with him) are the exception but biggie was really the icebreaker for the other to follow, before, no one in ny did the numbers he did. And they both went platinum in 95 so it took a lot of time for their albums sales to grow ( it was the 95 biggies singles that help him doing these numbers on a mid term) and it went with ny reclaming his spot and rap being more and more commercial, before that year, thoses certifications were beyond reach for all the east coast cats. Successful or not

Now fast foward to 98, rap is big and the albums were going platinum within weeks. Mind you nas sold more than 400000 copies of I am his first week in 99. The rap landscape was not even slighty the same anymore

Case and point is illmatic was not some sky opening moment in hiphop. Just a fabricated tall tall of a lyrical miracle rapper being prematurely crowned while the real king biggie was bringing ny back and forcing nas to change his whole approach from illmatic to IWW.

I'm not debating if "gold was the standard" or not. If you telling me this was a huge event for ny back then and these are the numbers other ny artst were doing back then,then how good was nas really doing? When he clearly wasnt the top draw in his own region.

His first album was a critical classic and his second album was a commercial success.
One can argue that whatever IWW backlash which was imminent would have been forgotten had he died as we would have no Nastradamus. I think as great as Life after Death is, had he lived Biggie would have faced a little bit of an underground backlash like Nas did. But he died and that didnt happen. If we're saying nas goes out with his 2 best albums, then there's a lot of what ifs and people romanticizing the material even more
