Also, nationalism- which is something that affects Europeans more so than Africans- is very similar to tribalism. There are many nations within various African countries and if they were divided as such then we would be calling them nationalists instead of tribalists.
Exactly. The whole concept of "nation-state" is born in Europe when they wanted to align the "state" with the "nation". People confuse "nation" and "nation-state" now, but back then it was much clearer that "nation" meant a homegenous group of people -with or without a formal existence- on a certain territory, speaking the same language, having the same overall culture, etc. Which is exactly what a "tribe" is. There's a famous saying in Italy : "Fatta l'Italia, ora bisogna fare gli Italiani" ("Now that Italy has been created, we have to create Italians) which shows quite well that nation and state seldom overlap and that modern countries created new nations. Same in France. Indeed, there are many nations within African countries, which leads to "tribalism", which is really nationalism. If Catalunya were in Africa them wanting their independence woud be called tribalism, same with Flanders in Belgium.
