I have a relative where the husband basically checked out of family life, not because of anything his wife/kids did but because he had some personal issues that led to depression and his coping mechanisms basically don't leave him enough emotional energy to give anything to his family. He's still working and providing and all but it's a shytty situation for the three kids (especially the son) who have a father who just shuts himself up in his room all the time and isn't a part of their lives.
