It always makes me laugh when people pretend like Illmatic isn't obviously one of the greatest albums in rap. It's like: 'is your ear busted or something?' Its greatness is obvious as fukk. Perfect beats, perfect vocals, perfect rhymes. The ENTIRE time. Nobody's ever pulled that off. Not to say that there aren't great albums on a similar level, but they all have at least one less-great moment. Illmatic is the only flawless rap album imo. That's precisely why it's looked at as the GOAT album.
"Memory Lane" isn't a 'better' song than "Who am I", but Illmatic has 8 other Memory Lane/goat-level records and zero filler. Doggystyle doesn't.
lots of them. To be honest, rap is full of fantastic debuts. The real question is: what are GOAT-level sophomore albums? Number one to me is easily Supreme Clientele. Then I'd through Low End Theory in there.

cmon breh. I fukk with Wu heavy but they were NEVER on Nas's level when it came to the pen. Nas vocally is also superior to everyone not called Method Man. Illmatic has flawless production. Ironman doesn't. The vast majority of those beats are nowhere as good as the ones on Illmatic. You can already see where this is going.

Madvillainy is a classic, but it is by no means a debut. DOOM dropped 3 albums the year before alone, and that isn't even counting Operation:Doomsday or his work with KMD
Paid in Full is basically a glorified EP as well.
And I think you meant Criminal Minded, if you were going with debuts.

Except Legal Drug Money. I know you love that album, but it’s just not held in that regard.
Illmatic is better than all those album though. Only one album better than it.

If nas pen was 5/5 wus was 4.5/5. Nas didnt have the charisma of half the wu either nor the energy. Gza and deck at the time were just as good if not better lyrically. Deck was like nas pt 2 to me.
Cuban linx is better than illmatic. What it may have “lacked” (which it didnt, the slang on cuban linx >>>> lyrics on illmatic.. not didnt even touch his prime yet)

How could an album as flawless as cuban linx is, where the weakest song is spot rushers and maybe knuckleheads which are both still 4/5, JUST as influential as illmatic, twice the length be anything BUT seen as better

Like i said, 6/9 joints are perfect. PERFECT. But many albums got 6 perfect joints i just named 9 for cuban linz so by reason of divine mathematics can an album twice the length, twice the quality, twice the content be any less?
Mind you, these albums were just as important to the culture as illmatic when they dropped. Illmatic didnt even cert gold til a year and a half later. Less impact, classic but singles that didnt pop... i just dont get the infatuation.
Why are dudes so stressed over illmatic and not say... paid in full? Makes no sense to me whatsoever.
Illmatic gets stupid love cuz its where large p, premier, qtip, pete rock with their individual fan bases came together to give nas illmatic. I prefer rzas classics, biggies, and mobb deeps to anything nas.
