It was a joke!
Reading about Black history turned me off religion, if you were raised religious like that, you'd often hear, "God isn't a lapdog" and, "God's always quiet during a test"

The whole prayer = asking for wishes thing was always a non-factor to me

Agnostic here.

With my father's passing, continued systemic uncalled-for injustices against my swaths of underserving people, atrocities on a daily basis (natural disasters killing thousands), judgmental opinions from religious zealots and the evilest of men/women continuing to thrive, I've held a rather complicated mindset with any idea of a deity.:yeshrug:

I sometimes wonder if people moving towards atheism is responsible for the uptick in depression. I feel that there is a degree of merit in the saying "ignorance is bliss".

From a personal point of view, I found that I was happiest when my faith in God was high. Things didn't always work out but I would tell myself that things would work out and lived life with the belief that God was in my corner.

Now I live life with the view of relying on what is tangible, what can be observed and what can be controlled. I'd say that I'm more productive, but there is a feeling of emptiness.

There should be more studies on the results, mentally, of losing faith.

I hear folks basically say 'I don't believe in prayer but when I pray it doesn't work'. Prayer is interacting with God. If you have no relationship with God why would asking him for something every once in a while 'work' the way you want it to? God states over and over that he wants relationships with people but people want God to be their genie. And I'm speaking of myself at times here as well so no shade.

Humans have been depressed since the beginning of time. Just like humans have had all types of mental health issues and disorders since the beginning of time.

It's the acknowledgement of depression that is the recent phenomenon - not depression, itself. In fact, I'd argue that religion can be a tool that inhibits acknowledgement, understanding and addressing the likes of depression, because you're more likely to seek whatever answers you're looking for in your faith, rather than addressing the underlying issues.

What about those older black folks that have “strong relationships” with god but struggle in so many ways their whole entire life?

read about this biblical figure and ask yourself this, what is the end result of "emptiness"?

his name means "Emptiness" personally i would not want him in the seat of my belief.
