Someone did and his name was Eminem.

I too would use the word appropriation just because it makes more sense. I would actually say misappropriation. However, in this case I personally would call it cultural theft on especially by the his supporters because they are not real rap fans but they want to have that feeling of "rolling with their homies" or whatever.

*edit: I'd go into more detail but i'm so damn tired. But consider that fact that rap doesnt't get much play outside of cities. Even then it's limited to certain stations. Then take a safe white guy with a rap song and play it on every station. so i guess maybe it's not stealing. someone has to have something before it can be taken away.

a more suitable word would be "appropriate" as opposed to steal.

Cultural appropriation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Okay. So then we agree that what we're discussing is one culture adopting the traits and symbols of another culture. And we agree that's not the same as theft. It's "appropriation."

So is appropriation bad? And if so, why is it bad?

It seems like the main gripe here is that appropriation of certain cultural traits by ONE culture may potentially redefine those traits in the original culture.

Can we say that black people "appropriated" white musical theory to create Jazz? Is that equally bad?

what do white people claim they created? out of curiosity?

I personally don't feel like i'm trying to steal anyones culture, in london/UK, people of all races (mainly youths) all share near enough the same culture nowadays
Math, Science, Civilization (Greeks), Religion, different forms of music (Rock and Roll). Even when they don't explicitly say "white people created it" they place images and symbols to insinuate that they are the originators. Til this day, white people are depict Ancient Egypt with white people.

musical theory comes from white people? or are you suggesting that there would be no Jazz without the "white music" that preceeded it, if so, which white music style inspired Jazz?

Not to derail the topic of conversation, but what do you define as "stealing" culture?

Culture is not physical property. It cannot be physically stolen (unless you steal a painting, but that's not quite the same thing).

You cannot copyright culture.

You cannot patent culture.

So how would you define "stealing" culture?
Okay, so now you are clearly trolling. You understand completely what I mean.

An example of stealing culture would be how white people are used to depict Ancient Egypt when in actuality it was BLACK Africans (not them middle eastern people).

Giving various white people credit for originating something that predated said white person.

Greetings.

Have you ever heard the adage that if a monkey walked into a car dealership, the salesman would show him pictures of monkeys driving cars?

The notion that "x people are/have insert y characteristic", I would suggest, only makes sense if you consider "x people" as a monolithic entity that transcends time and space. I.e: Jews are Christ killers.

The complaint that certaim white people "appropriate" certain forms of black culture is not entirely unreasonable. Yet has anyone ever considered the flip side of that coin?
How many aspects of white civilization have been adopted by the rest of the world?

Truth. These dog fukking, cave dwelling, inferior, recessive, albino SAVAGES need to stop feeling so entitled. The Honorable Minister teaches us that we will DESTROY them all with the MOTHER WHEEL.

But we aren't racist.

@LionofJudah I noticed you are attempting to calcify the pineal gland of my rep once again. You may be a tiny little target, but the ray guns of the MOTHER WHEEL will be able to vaporize you, AGENT.

This nikka is trying too hard.

I don't understand the point of these threads. I doubt people are going to be honest. I don't believe in inherent evil btw (that seems to religious in nature, and I'm an extreme relativist. Now if we go out on an evolutionary angle, then I guess inherent evil can exist, but it would mean everybody is evil because the gene is inherently selfish).
