The worst part about this is that they're basing this entirely on rappers and athletes.

Unfortunately, athletes and entertainers are the worldwide face of African-American men. We don't dominate any other area enough when it comes to numbers. I wish people wouldn't put much stock into what celebs do or say, but unfortunately we live in an age where the cult of personality is more powerful than ever. These folks have a huge platform, and what they do or say can have an influence a ton of impressionable young folk.

As for the topic itself, I like Van, and I have no problem with what he said. I appreciate the brotha for trying to get a dialogue going even though I doubt any progress will be achieved with this.
