That's not even what he's asking breh.

He's asking whether attaining success without a hit is noteworthy. Which it is, for the reasons I and others mentioned.

Your whole rigamarole about nerd fan naivety is entirely beside the point.

It's not noteworthy, a hit is just a separate kind of success altogether. ..it's like asking "is winning the mvp, without being named defensive player of the year worthy of praise" ...not really, they're two separate accolades. ..attaining success without a hit just means you have room to be MORE successful if you had one

This whole "hits are overrated " shyt you're on is 100% silly nerd internet rap smark rhetoric

If I were to amend that to read "hits are an overrated measure of a rapper's success." what would you think?

hit records only mean you reached a certain demographic, some of them don't even know the artform or even invested time to dig deep into it either. to say that only matters means you don't listen to anything else from that artists besides what they force fed you on the airwaves. you can still have career of longetvity without them.

Stop it. Most of Curren$y's early fanbase were exposed to him through Wayne's mixtapes, then him leaving YMCMB was a pop of publicity in and of itself. Then once the whole Jet Life imprint came to be, he began to cultivate a fanbase through those projects. None of which had hits.

Where the Cash At was not a hit like that.

Hits are made for radio listeners particularly woman listeners, those songs are worthless, fleeting and usually the worst tracks on the album. People don't even respect it, its a cheap gratification like a prostitute. Try playing one of those "hits" a year or two later and people will laugh at you.

:dahell:

Hits are the songs that people remember years later. I'd guarantee you more people could recite "Hate Me Now" line for line then any of the songs off of Illmatic, which most people would say is a top 5 rap album. And I'd bet :ahh:makes more money off that track then any of the songs from his classic albums. At the end of the day having great albums is cool to cater your fans, but hit records are what you get remembered for by the majority.

i think it sucks more to have hits but not be successful. how you capable of dropping an anthem or two per year, but no one actually buys your albums, you can't tour outside of club appearances? yin yang twins come to mind, yo gotti is in this spot as well

depends if your making your music for art or fame/recognition, most mainstream rappers do it for the latter. If thats the case then yes, a hit is paramount and the only thing that brings their music validation since thats all its reallty worth

I think it is something to brag about.

Hits are overrated. The fans want an album or a mixtape full of good songs, not just a couple big tracks. Also, hits are products of many factors other than just the quality of the music; current mainstream appeal being one of them. Whereas being successful without a hit suggests consistency, which again, fans like and appreciate.

Curren$y is a good example of my point.

Great points. The best artists follow this pattern.
