i think it sucks more to have hits but not be successful. how you capable of dropping an anthem or two per year, but no one actually buys your albums, you can't tour outside of club appearances? yin yang twins come to mind, yo gotti is in this spot as well

You just described Young Dro's existence. :wow:

Ot genesis has two hits now and in a year will be struggling to get bookings unless of course he comes out with another one. Ace Hood had a couple hits and where is he now.

I think it is something to brag about.

Hits are overrated. The fans want an album or a mixtape full of good songs, not just a couple big tracks. Also, hits are products of many factors other than just the quality of the music; current mainstream appeal being one of them. Whereas being successful without a hit suggests consistency, which again, fans like and appreciate.

Curren$y is a good example of my point.

Dope post.

Depends on your definition of success. 50K paying/Loyal fans last longer and brings more doe overtime. A hit is temporary but it reaches more people/generates more revenue as well opens up the path to relationships. Both have benefits. When i tried to do it my og Uncle P from the Yac gave me that game. Tech 9 has more money than lil flip, cassidy, kiss, and 80% of hip hop. To do it under the radar usually means you never changed and a nikka like me would rather lose bein me than win doin you.

Currensy is the first example I thought of.

I agree. Why not? I mean f you make music, and it's dope, and you're successful, with or without hits---good for you. Brag about it all day.

Music is either dope or it isn't.

I will say this. I don't know HOW big a factor I would consider it, but if we're talking a best emcees of all time list, I would feel compelled to have hits be at least a small category. Like if you're a Redman and you've got 3 back to back classic albums but no true hits so to speak, that's fine. And that might outweigh someone with a bunch of dope hits but no classics, or maybe even 1 classic. Like 50 made some dope hits and has 1 almost classic (or even arguably classic in GRODT depending on how you frame your argument) but I would never put 50 over Redman on my top rappers list.

Depends who we're talking about. I will say that a great rapper that CAN make a good hit song just adds icing on the cake. Like, the fact that Biggie didn't really want to do Juicy or Big Poppa, but did them and made them really good anyways, is dope to me. On the other hand I can't really shyt on someone like Nas for not being good at making hits, because his catalogue is pretty damn strong.

What are you talking about.

Fans don't care about projects anymore unless it's from their favorite artist

Hits are what keep you fed and relevant
That's sad though.

Schoolboy Q just dropped what's probably the best hip hop album of the year and that shyt is gonna get overlooked because it doesn't have a clear "hit" on it, but it's his best project. And he can even do hits. But Blank Face has not hits on it, but is still fire.

I want to believe you aren't all the way right. Because there's been some legit buzz building about that Q album, despite the lack of hits and marketing. I think sometimes peoples' capacity to enjoy a good project gets overlooked. If you give people dope albums, they'll enjoy them. At least sometimes.

It's nonsensical just for the fact that having a hit single is an entirely separate accomplishment and revenue stream completely. ..people conflating hit records purely with industry evildoing or the lack thereof as some kind of underdog virtue is some stupid ass nerd rap smark naive bullshyt

All things being equal, having a hit > not having a hit....In pretty much every regard

Prince didn't have a hit in the past 10 years. What does that say for him.

Dem Franchize Boyz had hits...

Them Swag Surfing nikkas...

Flo Rida has tons of hits, more hits than Nas... will people put him ahead of Nas?

U sound dumb

I'm a big Nas fan but :martin: especially when you factor in he has a 20+ career. You know damn well Ooochie Wally isn't a big hit and Hate Me Now isn't really one either. So yes he fits the criteria for being successful without hits. :manny:

No you sound dumb comparing Prince to Dem Franchize Boys.

Prince is anything but a hitless artist. Legitimate hits endure is the larger point of this thread I think

Nah, you just lack reading comprehension. ..don't care enough to spell it out for you

Okay, fukk it I'll give you a hint ... "all things being equal " isn't just some phrase people use cause it sounds nice...it actually means something. ..reflect on that and reconsider how silly responding to my post with prince vs dem fukking franchise Boyz is

No this nikka DIDN'T say he hear Oochie Wally in the clubs today :lolbron: I'm tempted to make a separate thread about it :mjlol: and Hate Me Now is straight but it's TRULY borderline when you talk about being a "hit"
Here's the charts for it
U.S. Billboard Hot 100

62
U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs 18
U.S. Billboard Hot Rap Singles 8
nikka it reached number 8 on the damn RAP charts :martin:
And you still trying to argue that 3 "hit" records in a 20 year career makes him not fit the category of the thread :beli:
of course you not going to entertain me cause you KNOW you sound like an idiot. But we used to that from you :yeshrug:
