I think it is something to brag about.
Hits are overrated. The fans want an album or a mixtape full of good songs, not just a couple big tracks. Also, hits are products of many factors other than just the quality of the music; current mainstream appeal being one of them. Whereas being successful without a hit suggests consistency, which again, fans like and appreciate.
Curren$y is a good example of my point.
Currensy is the first example I thought of.
I agree. Why not? I mean f you make music, and it's dope, and you're successful, with or without hits---good for you. Brag about it all day.
Music is either dope or it isn't.
I will say this. I don't know HOW big a factor I would consider it, but if we're talking a best emcees of all time list, I would feel compelled to have hits be at least a small category. Like if you're a Redman and you've got 3 back to back classic albums but no true hits so to speak, that's fine. And that might outweigh someone with a bunch of dope hits but no classics, or maybe even 1 classic. Like 50 made some dope hits and has 1 almost classic (or even arguably classic in GRODT depending on how you frame your argument) but I would never put 50 over Redman on my top rappers list.
Depends who we're talking about. I will say that a great rapper that CAN make a good hit song just adds icing on the cake. Like, the fact that Biggie didn't really want to do Juicy or Big Poppa, but did them and made them really good anyways, is dope to me. On the other hand I can't really shyt on someone like Nas for not being good at making hits, because his catalogue is pretty damn strong.
