I have a degree in biology and graduated with a low gpa. No jobs really ask for your gpa, unless it's for an internship. Having a high gpa does not mean someone is smart, because people pay for grades, have sex for grades, kiss ass for grades and etc. The standardized tests ie. MCAT, PCAT, NCLEX and etc., shows your real gpa.

With having a degree in biology and trying to get a job in the science field, the majority of the time you have to start off at the bottom and work your way up. Some people do not have to do that, but from my experience, they had the right skin color. I had to work my way up, I started off as a lab tech, then worked in QA/QC, then formulation chemist and now a supervisor over the lab and production (chemical manufacturing).

My degree shyt was alright, I really don't care about it. Truthfully I forget I have a degree sometimes. I was going to drop out in my second semester, because I always wanted to have my own business. But, I stayed because of my mom and it makes her look good. Plus I shyt on people who thought I was going to be some bum.

Is having a degree, really better than not having one?

Well it depends on the person. Most people who have degrees do not have that drive, because most have that idea that a piece of paper is a guarantee for success. Not really, you have to have that drive also.

Yeah, people do not know there are doctors who graduated with a degree in music and dance.

Also, back in the days you did not need a college degree to enter into medical school, just the pre-reqs. Colleges and med schools changed that shyt and said you need you need to finish your undergrad first, then you can go to med school.

It was all about money
That's real. I haven't found anything yet but u motivated me to get back into the hunt, wat part of the country u live in ?

I think this is a difficult question to gauge.

On one hand you have fields that require you to have a degree for entry. You also have fields that also require advanced degrees just to walk through the door.

If that's your chosen path then having a degree is invaluable and completely necessary.

Then you have the fields where it isn't necessarily a requirement, but without one you're probably always going to get screened out by HR before you even have a chance.

In those fields, IT being one to an extent, you're going to find a lot of value in networking and honestly this may go for most jobs.

That said, I work at a large tech company and I don't ever recall being asked to discuss my degree or anything about beyond just making small talk or reliving the good times.

The only exception I've seen is if you want to go into management or some highly competitive sales positions. Still if that's your goal and you are promising they'll pay for you to get what you need. But that's probably a bit further down the road than you are.

Hang that piece of paper proudly and get out and network. You'd be surprised at what's out there paying great money.

took me 8 years to graduate with a B.S in biology with a low gpa at that. currently working at a car dealership and a gym part time. not many jobs for a bio degree outside of going to a professional school which i am not qualified for. Taking a class this summer and in the fall to see if i can get into a grad program that is stilll somewhat related to my degree. i got friends making 50, 60, 70, 80 k in help desk/ warehouse work, that went to school with me that decided to drop out early. most of the time i feel like a made a mistake continuing in school.

tired of the odd job thing and im looking for a career i can dive into. Any brehs got a degree they not using? is having a degree really better than not having one?
you could easily get a help desk / warehouse job just like them folks. but there is a reason you dont want such a job. that reason is why you went to school. now make your degree work for you

btw..maybe if you actually studied and got a good gpa you wouldnt have this problem

Debt will kill you in the long run, but I'd rather have a degree than not. Man, I dunno. A trainer at Comcast put me on to real estate back in 2008. Gave me books and knowledge. I bought my first home in 2009 at the bottom of the market. I held on to that house for 6 years man, put equity into it. The market bounced back and I sold that house for a 130k profit. I didn't need to go to school for that, networking and reading got me that investment along with extremely low debt and good credit. Some advice from me? Get into real estate man. Save your money, keep your credit right and use that shyt as leverage with the banks. Honestly out of all the fields I've ever thought about, real estate was something I was always passionate about.

It depends, but in the long term it's generally better to have a degree, even though having one won't necessarily pay off right away.

I work in IT and have a degree. At first it barely helped me any and I started out working the same crappy helpdesk jobs as people without a degree, but fast forward five years and I end up getting promoted and most of my coworkers without a degree (even the ones older than me) are still working the same job. In general having a degree is basically a shield to protect your resume from getting tossed too fast.

I got a bachelor's degree in graphic design. But I graduated in the thick of the economic downturn in 2009 :sadcam:. I had a lot of interviews back then, but employers back then looked at me like :comeon:, "why should we hire YOU and not dude with 20 years experience willing to work for an entry level salary". :gucci: Not only that but most "entry level" graphic design jobs require 2-5 years full-time experience. But a lot of industries are like that.

I was the only one of my brothers and sisters to graduate college and get a degree. But by the time I graduated from college it was a hardcore recession and I was a hardcore alcoholic but not ready to admit it yet :merchant:. I've gotten sober since and I just got offered a decent warehouse gig after being unemployed for seven months. I got offered a warehouse job because 90% of my work experience is warehouse work. I really hate warehouse work, but not a whole lot of industries are willing to take a chance on you when you have no experience unless you know someone or you're white.

I think college nowadays is just another facet of the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality of Generation Y. Literally, anyone with a modicum of patience can get a college degree. College is the new high school. It's a billion dollar industry. The once tiny community college I attended back in the early 2000's has exploded since and now is a massive campus because everyone and their mother goes to college these days. Back in the day, only the ultra smart and the ultra rich attended college. And those are the only people who truly still benefit from going to college. Unless you live somewhere like the DC area where someone with an African American studies degree can get a job making well over $100K because of minority gov't quotas.

Those of us who grew up in the 90's bought into the whole "go to school, go to school, you don't want to be in these streets" message peddled by people like 2pac; people who never actually went to college their damn selves :pachaha:. And who can blame them, the streets were a fukked up place back in the 90's as they are today.

But the problem is that America made it shameful to work your way up from a low prestige job. People are like "go to college so you don't have to work at McDonald's". But at least McDonald's is work experience. No one is going to hire someone with no work experience. College doesn't teach life skills point blank. The "college experience" of getting drunk everyday for four plus years will take it's toll on you. I didn't want to end up like my lazy jobless drunk uncles until I became a jobless drunk uncle myself :dwillhuh:. That was the case with me. A lot of the homeless people you see in the street just made a few bad decisions that spiraled over time.

A lot of life is a gamble. You can never tell what tomorrow brings let alone the next five or ten years. I never thought I would graduate into a recession and not be able to find a job in my field. But most people don't work in the field that they studied in college. College never guarantees any type of career success. You'd be surprise to learn many of your favorite rappers hold bachelor's degrees.

Chem Eng Masters ...purely for my parents. The only bonus I got
was meeting a few cats in college for later biz opportunities.

I can't see myself being employed ever again but how would I explain choosing business
over getting into a steady well paying career to some square ass interviewer ?

I'd rather be homeless... :wow:

But to answer the question, having a degree is vital in certain industries, but you can never go wrong with a trade.

to be honest, with just a biology degree, you're gonna need to go back to college to get a master's in education in order to teach in a regular school and make decent money.

btw, my GPA was under 3.0 when I graduated college. I never put that on my resume and have never been asked to provide it. GPA doesn't matter unless you're trying to get into a grad school.
Or work as a consultant, which would be one of the prime areas for @DamienWayne
Degrees in use are always better than no degree in use, but it depends on the field.

From someone who has a bachelor's in Nursing and working on my Masters, u really need to get a degree in the RIGHT field. I have had so many friends who pursue degrees years ago and still to this day cant find work or deal with shady unreliable people/businesses. IE, my boy got his degree in graphics design. Came back to town after attending Long beach college and to this day works odd jobs for income and has to bum it up at different peoples apartments. He really cant do shyt unless he has connections in the city. Now he's changing his route and becoming a Pharmacists and already has a job set upon graduation.

Props to OP for making this thread. I'm about to finish my bachelors after this upcoming semester and ironically I have to take BIO. This will be my second time taking the shyt cause the first time I goofed off tbh. With that said, I consider either going back to school and getting a masters in public health or a Medical Technician certificate since I'm getting degree a BA in health and nutrition science.

I was thinking about doing EMT as well but that's usually something people do during med school residency. I also thought about going a whole different direction and getting a masters in business. I realize I could probably do well in that field but so many get degrees and still are not running successful businesses or getting good jobs in that field.

Too broad a question without other variables. Thecoli seems to have an IT bias so you'll probably get answers specific to that. I work in mental health where a Masters/Phd is necessary.

If you're asking if you need a degree to make decent miney then Id say no. If I could start over, id probably go to community college/trade school. Save my $ and get into real estate.
Why, don't you got benefits and 401k? You probably eating good as a Psychologist PHD/Master's? no?
