By June 1991, the album sold 14.5 million copies worldwide

FOURTEEN MILLION COPIES sold, mostly off the strength of one song.

if hot nikka is a classic then it is a modern classic at best, however the song is not even a year old. give it time.

more than 20 years later and EVERYONE still knows can't touch this.
Ok? I know this already. I said Hot nikka was a hot song as well, seeing as how it was number 6 on the billboard, i never said it was bigger than Cant Touch This

What makes classics of today(I Dont Like, Hot nikka, Flockaveli) any different from shyt like Top Billin, or My addidas?

those songs are still recognized more than 20 years later.

let's see if in 20 years "hot nikka" is ever played on a classic radio block sandwiched in between "shook ones" and "mama said knock you out"

IDK about Hot nikka, cuz i was a Vine hit, but you're crazy if you dont think a song like ' I Dont Like' isnt a classic. Thats the definition of a song that defined a era, and a generation in time.

okay but what is it explicitly about hot nikka that you believe catapults it above the other hit songs of it's day? why do you believe this song in particular is going to be forever recognized as a standout track in the years to come?

the beat? the lyrics? the attitude? i'm sorry I just don't see how that song broke the mold in any way, nor do i think that any of those aspects were executed in such a way that it should be praised for its excellence.

I don't see what was new, exciting, or fresh about it. I don't see what it is about that song that's gonna give it a long shelf life.

maybe you could help me.

It was about 10 times more succesful than pop lock n drop it
they both peaked at #6 on the billboard hot 100 :manny:

with pop lock coming during the ringtone craze days

and i've actually heard pop lock being played on the radio..i still have never heard this song outside of instagram and vine videos :manny:

I dont think its the classic song of this year, but millions of people do. My opinion isnt more than theirs.

it's a hit song, no one can deny that. but a CLASSIC hit song? only time will tell. however a classic hit usually possesses some kind of exceptional characteristic.

the fact is almost anyone can have a hit record with the right promotion and the right endorsement. but to make a song that will forever continue to be a hit several years later actually requires some standard of excellence wouldn't you agree?

Aight, man...

There's no way to predict the future. Sure, "Hot nikka" can be forgotten in 20 years. But just the same, it can be remembered. It depends on who's doing the forgetting and remembering. Older heads don't really check for new shyt won't remember it, fine. But people younger than them likely will remember it. They'll remember that dance and how popular that was, they'll remember when it would come on and everybody would react to it (I've seen it for myself), they'll remember how everybody would recite "get up out my trap houuuuuse!" and "Mitch caught a body bout a week ago, week ago!". And these might just be small things to us older people, cause we've seen all this kinda stuff before... but EVERY generation has this kind of song.

I know this might be considered "blasphemy!!" but if I had to equate it to an older song, I'd say "Top Billin". Now by all means, "Top Billin" was lyrically FAR behind the best rappers of the 1987 era. Milk Dee was never ever in contention to be the best ANYTHING. He sure a fukk wasn't about to see KRS, Rakim, LL, Kane, or any of the other MCs of that time that were bringin' it. Basic as it gets, in words and delivery. But muthafukkas LOVE that song. The beat was undeniable, and as simple as those lyrics were, everybody couldn't wait to get to "Milk is chillin! Giz is chillin'! What more can I say, top billin'!" It's one of the most sampled and remade songs of all time. And still, I bet that in 1987, some guy was sittin' around talkin' bout :stopitslime: "this nikka can't even rap! This shyt ain't gonna last long". But it's a 3 minute record that represents that era every bit as much as "Paid In Full" or "Rebel Without A Pause" does.

fine but what aspect of hot nikka do you believe is undeniable?

what was so unique about the song in particular?

If I gotta explain it, you'll never understand it. You just gotta see it.

I'll put it like this: a lot of people had hits this year, and those hits just ran for however long they did and died a quick death. This record was another situation, in the sense that it might not be as big as it was this summer, but it still hasn't actually died. This ain't "Cut That bytch Off" or "bytch U Guessed It" or anything like that... this song is one of very few that took over the year.

With songs like that, it's not about how unique it is, it's just how much people take to it. It's a song by a nikka that nobody knew, by a producer that has MAYBE a handful of notable songs, it's less than 3 minutes long, and it's pretty much a long rap with no actual hook... and by hook or crook, it caught on and caught on quick. It's a rarity in these days where you got people tryin' hard as fukk to make what they think is gonna be a hit because they use "the formula" and it still doesn't work half the time. Even Shmurda himself couldn't do it again after he got this one, and at this point, he'll probably become the answer to a trivia question someday.

Juvie "Back dat ass up" is a classic

Hot nikka will be a classic in the same vein when it comes to NY

nikkaz who are like 18 now..20 years from now will play Hot nikka on some "OOOO sht this takes me back...this sht classic..remember how we used to turn up to this"

Perfect analogy :ehh:
