See this ish right here? I guess u forgot, in the 90's Busta was running FLIPMODE SQUAD? Or are you old enough to know that? Busta had artists and he was running with The Roc, The Diggs Brothers, Erick Sermon and Fat Joe, talkn that boss ish. Yea, dude, Busta WAS on some mogul ish bruh. Yea, that's the entire point of this thread. He WAS a boss and he WAS putting on artists. Rah Digga, Rampage, Spliff Starr and other dudes that nobody knows. Yea dude, this thread has merit. HE WAS A BOSS.
Having a rap crew that doesn't make you a damn mogul.![]()
If you remember every artist that was successful in the late 90's had their own imprint under their parent label for their rap crew, so that's nothing special at all. All that means is that Rah Digga's/Flipmode Squad's advance & budget went straight through him plus he got a few extra points on the album. lol if you think Flipmode Records ever had an actual staff. Absolutely no comparison to Cash Money Records or even Rocafella for that matter. He couldn't put anything out with Elektra giving it the green light.
Bottom line is he signed with the winning team. Busta's never been associated with the independent grind he's always been the guy who tore down big stages & muscled his way onto the hottest track of the moment. Being as close as possible to the brightest spotlight he can find is more lucrative for his career than trying to "boss up". No ones waiting on the Spliff Star & Baby Sham LPs.
I said what I said initially because I recognized that dissing Busta for being on Cash Money a foolish criticism right off the bat. Busta Rhymes isn't a mogul, never ran his own record label, etc. He's an artist. He's taking an L by being signed to the same team as Lil' Wayne? How?
I'll humor you with a sports analogy.
Ray Allen (who I'm not even a fan of) has had a hall or fame career but he wasn't much of an impact player in the 2011/2012. His Celtic team won a chip a few years ago but as of 2011/12 the Celts were clearly on the decline.
After his contract was up with the Celts he ended up signing a lucrative deal with the DEFENDING CHAMPION Miami Heat for the 2012/13 season and beyond. As of right now he's only the 5 or 6th most impactful player on their team, but he's going back to the NBA Finals again. Is that a loss for Ray Allen? Yes he's playing with Lebron & D. Wade. He will never be on their level. But so what? He has a chance to win another championship. In addition to that he's already in an elite class of athletes and when it's all said and done all 3 (Bron/Wade/Allen) will be placed in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Moral of the story? Play your position.
I see what you're saying and you have a valid point, but only applied to the financial side. Busta is close to 40, made classic songs, was part of classics, has been well respected for 2 decades now. My point is, why is there this need to be relevant in the mainstream on Cash Money, trying to cater to young people with mostly ignorant music that lacks both substance and style and is usually bland and even tasteless, This why it's a loss in my opinion, because Busta traded in both creative growth and maturity, to cater to the Chris Brown/Lil Wayne demographic.
Rappers dont really work for other rappers. The label is more a brand under a larger recprd company and is more just a marketing thing. In essence, Busta and Wayne both are signed under Universal and Busta being signed to Young Money is just universal assigning a brand to him to raise his profile to the next album. It aint like Wayne is sitting there assigning release dates and going through the budget. At best (keyword: at best) Baby and Slim are involved in the logistics but truth be told they're all signed to a bigger label who operates to deliver them as a product to the public.

Take a good look at Busta's career. His style is completely catered towards mainstream exposure. He's constantly feeding off of the energy of other hot artists. It's comical that you guys are criticizing him for doing what's kept him successful throughout his career. There's absolutely no evidence that he'd be able sustain himself based off of an underground/indie movement or be successful while distancing himself from the hot mainstream artists of today. You remember when he did a whole mixtape over Dilla beats and it seemed like nobody gave a f^ck? You remember how his one verse on Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now" remix got a ton of fanfare & had him buzzing heavily in the mainstream again? It's cool to not like Chris Brown & Lil Wayne but seriously get over yourself. Lol at "maturity" Busta Rhymes is a character that was created by Trevor Smith. Who really wants to see Busta Rhymes make "mature" music? You can disengage from today's mainstream hip-hop scene but Busta cannot as rocking alongside (and sometimes outshining) other hot artists has always been his bread and butter. He doesn't need to on his own to be creative, he's always taken what other people have done and put his own creative spin on it. Plus those 30/40 somethings who loved "Scenario" aren't likely to buy a ticket to see him in concert so why would he let them dictate what he does musically in 2013?
His best 2 albums (When Disaster Strikes and ELE) barely had any big rap features on it. Those were his glory days, he had his own lane and sold well. Now he's making twerk songs (), damn near or in his 40's. Sure he's making money and is succesful in a way (still wondering when ELE 2 is dropping though, seems like
ain't having it) But like I said before, you only look at the financial side of things. What's wrong with accepting your peak is in the past and focus on making good music. Why whore yourself out for more money, when you should have made a good enough amount by now.
At this point your just ignoring his reality and projecting your feelings onto him. Obviously he doesn't feel like he's whoring himself, he's been doing the same type of sh!t for the longest. He's just trying to continue to be successful doing what he does best. When it's all said and done most people aren't going to dwell on the failures. They are going to want to listen to and discuss the material that they enjoyed the most. Trust, you'll get over it one day.
