MJ, Stevie, and Kells got him beat
Scratch R. Kelly from that list because he borrowed heavily from Marvin Gaye. MJ wasn't a soul singer, so MJ probably GOAT entertainer. Stevie comes the closest, aside from Donnie Hathaway.

Kells borrowed a bit but no denying the sheer amount of hits. Not to mention he wrote and produced almost all his music as well as many others. I think its too early for some people to wanna put Kells up there but his track record speaks for itself.

BTW MJ was nice with the vocals. It was the dancing that set him apart from everybody else but he woulda been successful just singing

He could be, but only cause of death. If marvin gaye were still alive he'd be in the same boat as Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin etc. Basically a black legend who people aren't really checking for now. Let's not forget his drug habit was fukking up his money so he would've probably sold his publishing and today would be relegated to singing hooks for hiphop records just to pay the bills while doing Superbowl half time shows with Elton John and Prince while we shake our heads and said geez why didn't this guy just die in the 80s

I'm sorry but you sound very naïve. Those artists you named aren't any less of legend because their music isn't played on top 40 radio today. They are still touring and nor do they have to push records every year because they paid their dues years prior by making quality music and doing what they loved and not selling out their sound. I saw Aretha Franklin about a week ago, yes she was great because she is the queen of soul and can still sang and obviously respected in the industry. You don't know how Marvin Gaye would've faired had he lived. Plenty of singers from back in the day had problems and obviously overcame them. The crap being played on the radio today is not what's hitting, for me anyway.

Marvin Gaye was IT.
