Sure some black folk intention is to just look down on other folk. That's the respectability, "pull ya pants up" shyt. But in other situations we can rightfully cringe cause like I said, "we laughing at ourselves" got a long minstrel/Jim Crow context of harmful & exploitative stereotypes.
You absolutely right that this is a black movie for black audiences so we should be able to enjoy ourselves. But that's the ideal situation. Would I really care if this shyt was some comedy set in Apollo?? Nah. The difference here is, how many time we talk bout Hollywood marginalizing black actors & still giving us minimal roles & boxing us in mindless comedy & slavery movies? Everyone from Viola Davis to Michael B Jordan been regretted bout this. So if Mike Epps, a famous black celebrity, is gone produce a movie like this....you think we will ever be seriously represented in some big budget all-American movie with leading/substantial/layered roles? Matter fact, if they never give us those substantial roles, shouldn't we be trying to make them movies ourselves?
We comparing Viola Davis and Michael B to Mike Epps? Yall do realize people who fit sterotypes exist right?Mike Epps is a goofy, loud nikka from the hood, who talks about doing drugs, strippers and other ratchet behavior in his standup

....a serious actor like Michael B Jordanand Violetta should regret always being asked to play this role as if there is no other type of black person that exist....Even Mike Epps I don't think always wants to play that same nikka which is why he has expanded on what types of roles he's taken as of late....But that don't mean he should be ashamed to play a goofy nikka from the hood when that's who he is.
Yall basically want people from the hood who relate to Mike Epps to go unrepresented,if Mike Epps style of comedy wasn't real it wouldn't be funny, and he wouldn't be popular, and he wouldn't have been around for as long as he has.....I'm not sure why yall would be so shook of stereotypes being reinforced in a movie for black people,as if black people don't know black people like Mike exist, have people like Mike in they family, live around nikkas like Mike,or are Mike themselves

.
Only explanation I could come up with is nikkas are ashamed of what white people might think, when white people aren't the audience...Or that some people in this thread are too uptight, ashamed of where they may have come from,or hate the hood and many of the people in it,for simply being who they are and different from you
The only problem is when this is the ONLY role, and only type of movie in Hollywood for black people, but I haven't seen a movie that looked this hood in a long time, and folks are being phony pretending this is all we see in Hollywood now

?maybe straight to dvd we see a lot of it,but that's about it....We talkin bout the same Mike who walked off set on Lee Daniels who was trying to get him to do some c00n shyt he was uncomfortable with....he's not uncomfortable being himself and shouldn't be.
