I think women prefer when you ask us if we have preferences/foods we don't eat, and then pick the spot yourself. This makes you seem more masculine, and makes us feel more special, like you are taking us out on a date and we are coming along on it- it makes us feel swept off our feet. Requesting that the woman pick out the spot makes you seem indecisive.

This also gives you the opportunity to choose a spot with great atmosphere/lighting, which will set the right mood for the date. If finances are an issue for you, you can make sure it's a spot you can afford.

Plus, it will feel like it is on "your turf". Generally, I think men should host dates on their turf early on. This includes going to your house rather than hers. You will feel and act more confident and in charge in your own spaces. If you go to the restaurant she chooses, then she is telling you what's good, what to order, etc, rather than the other way around.
