Jay Z rhymes were just more layered in 96 than Nas, Big, & Pac. No hyberbole. No cap. No BS. No whatever. I was still catching shyt decades later with Hov album. In 96 or hell even 2002 I didn’t know wtf a fiscal year was or meant. Tbh I still don’t truly know lol. Hov was speaking a different language. To the point a a poster on the Coli didn’t understand the word tedious. This was like 15 years after it’s release. Homey thought the word was a acronym. TDS (The Dough Syndrome):pachaha:

Man I know someone remember that

It’s no shade to Nas Big & Pac, but after a few months of listens I pretty much caught every thing:manny:

Yep, when Jay said it "should have went triple" on Mama Loves me, that was why.

There was so much sh*t dropped in 1996.

He also mentioned it on "Hard Knock Life"

"I gave you prophecy on my first joint, and y'all lamed out
Didn't really appreciate it, til the second one came out" - Hov

That line is saying people slept which was true but he also said "Ya'll lamed out" and "Didn' appreciate it" meaning he's complaining to the fans that weren't feeling it in 96. I felt Big knew for sure nobody slept on RTD when he said on "Life After Death":

"Make you a Classic like my 1st LP, Beef with me is unhealthy" - Big

1996 was a special year in Hip Hop and Jay is apart of the history with it being year his debut dropped.

RTD was a better album it was put together well

But

RD was some of the dopest poetry I've ever heard

JayZ rhymes still hold true till this day

He gave us jewels after jewels

"if every nikka in your click is rich, your click is rugged, nobody will fall cuz everyone would be each other's crutches"

RD wasnt even the best album of 96 :pachaha:

RTD had bigger impact and overall more entertaining

if big died after RTD, he'd still be immortalized

if jay died after RD he'd be lucky to be Big L status

RTD is not even in the same ballpark as RD....matter fact Vol 1 >>>> RTD as well

ready to die is easily the most overrated "classic" in hip hop......trust me it was PLENTY of folks who thought Juicy, Big Poppa and One More Chance were corny as hell....I used to hit the stop button on the VCR recording everytime those vids came on

Biggie thought Jay was nice on the mic. Most people did too.

Jay kinda revises history. RD is his baby. There is sentimental value to it.

Plus, Vol. 1 (2nd joint) didn't meet expectations either. It didn't blow up like they thought it would. Like Vol. 2 blew up.

Wasn 't until his 3rd album, Jay really made his mark.

People didn't sleep. They didn't lame out.

Beats Rhymes and Life.

^^That isn't laming out.

There was just better music out at that time. Longer established artists who dropped material. Jay wasn't Jay back then. He didn't become Jay until his 3rd album.

1996 was so strong. RD wasn't part of 96's history like that. It was a good album. It wasn't RTD. It wasn't Illmatic. Illmatic didn't sell like that. Took a while to go gold, but the critical acclaim was huge. That was a part of history. It really set the stage for the East Coast to make a comeback after the West Coast dominance. That is history. Making history is shifting the landscape.

RD didn't do that. He didnt' make his mark with RD, like RTD and Illmatic or even Mobb Deep's The Infamous. Those were released in crowded fields too.

They did “lame”out in 96 though

So when Hov blew up in 98 dudes went back and listened to his previous albums. Once they did it was a overwhelming amount of people to say he was that dude. Whether people thought so or not by 98’ Hov was labeled the best rapper in the game by huge portion of the game including his peers.
