fukk no :what:

jay z fooled people into believing that shyt is a classic. Everybody that was around when it dropped told me nobody even thought of anything when it came out it. Jay z's ass kept repeating how its a classic and some people believed him :bryan:
i can't believe people still say this shyt on here.

did you believe when lil wayne called himself the best rapper alive?

:camby:

and nas stans wanna say illmatic had immediate impact?

illmatic took 7 years to go platinum. (almost 8)

RD did it in 6

:mjpls:

Jay's lyrics plus the production it has aged better than most of the other records that came that year.
People miss how incredible that album is from a number of perspectives because they stay whining about the Jay/Nas beef :smh:. I've been listening to it recently and I love how it brings a cinematic perspective to the street life. shyt showcases the #dualities of the successes of hustling and simultaneously shows the mark wrongdoing leaves on your soul. Plus the song concepts are so amazing. D'Evils as a narrative? 22 two's as a turn-a-phrase showcase? The call and response structure of Ain't No N*cca and Coming of Age? The imagery and emotions in Dead Presidents? The smooth swaggeur of Cashmere Thoughts? There's just so much to digest and it just sounds nice and lush. There really isn't much 'pop' on this album at all.

Retrospect, Concept, are u kidding me ?

the album had zero impact when it was released, ZERO... it was an ant amongst GIANTS that year, it is what we thought it was the day it was released, the engineering and wordplay didn't evolve through your disc or cassette over the years... get over it .

Jay is one of the nicest to ever grab a mic, but lets keep it fresh playboy...

It was just viewed as another dope CD that dropped in 96 (back then)

It was a great album no doubt (no pun)

Still relevant today...but so are many other albums from that time.

The greatest trick Jay Z ever pulled was......having people repeat what he said.

The late Boxing historian, Bert Sugar called it the Muhammad Ali effect. Ali told everyone that he was the best of all time. People heard him say it enough times that they went.......damn, I guess he is the GOAT.
(FTR: I think Ali is the GOAT, but I always like this example of people eating up the self promoted hype)

If Jay got you thinking he's the GOAT or damn near the GOAT.. you'd certainly think Reasonable Doubt in the GOAT hip hop album then. :sas1:

Reasonable Doubt is the consensus best second tier album of all time... either that or lowest of the first tier

This is a classic Jay stans tactic. Reasonable Doubt came out long enough now to where a lot of members on the board were too young to remember the initial reaction. For a while it was a severely underrated album and arguably a classic but as time has gone on Jay has put out average album after average album so here we are with the ducktales "you should have been there when RD came out stories"... to justify his position as an artist.

It's a great album, it is nowhere near being the goat.

Man there are a couple of albums I would take over RD, and I mean a lot of couples. But if I had to put a GOAT hip hop album give me PE's Millions. Goin Off is up there also.
