I’ve told this story before, but my grandparents live in a country ass town in NC. Own a lot of land, passed down from my ancestor recently freed from slavery.
At the last reunion they were going over old stories and talked so highly of him and his wife. I felt so proud listening to his story, and the fact that both he and my great great great grandma made it possible for me to be here. They told the story on how he got the land. He had amassed some money, but laws in NC wouldn’t let a black man purchase land. He befriended a white man, and the white man purchased the land for him and transferred it to him.
I was in shock. I would’ve been terrified of that white man finessing me. Anyways, we still have all that land. We had a family meeting recently, and my grandparents recently divvied up the land amongst their siblings. My dad pulled me to the side, and told me he wants me to move my girl and my fam on the land he got. My grandparents just ask that we don’t sell it and keep it in the family. I love my family and all they’ve accomplished despite the obstacles.
My dad grew up in a recently integrated era, and slapped a white girl who called him the n word on the bus. I tell him today he’s lucky they didn’t hang him. My grandma and grandpa wouldn’t have let that happen, though. My grandpa is who I admire more than any one person in this world.
