Issa Rae says she doesn’t feels successful right now. Did the industry switch up on black content?

Real talk Breh you can film 2-3 test episodes yourself with a small crew and edit that footage into 15 good minutes to go along with your pitch. The technical barriers of even 10-15 years ago are gone now. Two small cameras and a MacBook is like $5k investment you can use just to scrape up ideas with.

Brehs finding ways to be resourceful is another story and a thread that isn’t worth being put on a public forum. Get off the Coli now and get a cook up going. Dont even wait until January.
I don't have the expenditures to fund an project as it takes away from art supplies

Noooo... they're using SZA and Keke to sell that movie. I guarantee no one went to saw that movie because she produced it. Harvey Weinstein was one of the biggest producers in the world but no one went to see his movies because his name was on it, they went to see it because he just so happenned to produce some of the biggest and best movies of his era.

I'm not moving goalposts, but we all know the only things used to sell movies are the stars and director. That's where the names that bring in the bank go.
Breh placement on posters are not just thrown on there for shyts and giggles. Actors and agents literally fight over placement and for a producer to get top billing like that it's because they feel it helps sell the movie. She literally didn't write or direct it but she is on the poster because she's a name to the targeted audience, and they hope the audience doesnt notice it says "from producer" in small print and just sees the name.

This post is funny for numerous reasons. There’s truth in this post, she may have been too black for the top heads. She openly put on and went hard for blacks, and yet black people are in this thread are shytting her
:wow:
Theres a way to be corny about the shyt. And yes, trolling white people doesn’t actually always work.

A lot of people thought they could talk about “white privilege” FOREVER as if that was moving the needle and flaunt bullshyt humanities degrees and “pseudo high level” niche bot discourse to talk down to people who didn’t endorse queer-infused thematic elements or anything not masquerading as insufficiently revolutionary :camby:

The literal purple haired blavity blacks fukked up and Issa Rae is realizing she’s gotta hustle.

I mean for fukks sake, they got Druski and Kevin Hart now. Why should they give Issa Rae money? Two straight black guys with actual edgy comedy not some liberal intersectional feminist.

This is America, people. Read the room.

The show was average and a lot of black people don’t like hearing the word every 5 seconds.

The shea butters and twitter loved it but honestly Issa plays the same character. There’s no depth to her projects. She’s where she’s supposed to be.

:manny:

The show was just okay and the N word stuff comes off as cheap and ignorant to the point where it’s a bratty trope.

Hulu isn’t going to come calling because you made a pseudo ratchet show about a chronically underachieving woman who calls her friends a bıtch every two seconds.

A lot of writers just can’t write well.

I have an associate who moved to LA like 5 years ago to screenwrite. It hasn’t gone well but you can’t be mad at someone going for their dreams but it’s not going to work out.

This is another thread.

Ayo, money is money. Shyt, if Aspire or Bounce give me a better deal to retain the rights of my IP and I gotta take a pay cut?

:manny: :manny: :manny:

Days of syndication are gone. If you can put out a tight ten-episode series and KIM and maybe pick up a contract that's the wave now. These folks still playin' with the old business model. If I was Issa, I woulda took some writing classes and tried to get in the writing rooms. Shyt, she plugged in, she coulda been sellin' spec scripts.
Real talk I was told to be a ghost painter until my breakthrough. I thought about it but a lot of folk art who are actually on in the art world suck, but they shyt sells.

I hear you. But unless you are connected, a pitch might not cut it. There needs to be more there as proof of concept. Folks are folks are filming and chopping up their own footage and putting it out there like that Fresh Prince reboot that was some shıt a breh made on his own.

If someone said “I have an idea, let do a non funny Fresh Prince” no one is going for it.

I just hit my lil cuzzin up at Chicago Institute. Fenna send him all my stuff. He in school for film/production and he is nice with the visuals. Only problem is , is the distance. But I think my show would be a hit. I wish I can tell you more, it's a one of a kind show and set in a surrealist format and about a black young man's life who is heterosexual. The show starts his final year and college and geaux on from there.

You literally just proved my point.

She's marketable to her target audience. That's it. Tyler Perry is a name you can slap on a movie poster with producer credits and it'll pull in more than the Black female demographic. She's not at that level.

She's Diablo Cody with melanin status.

It really is another thread but once upon a time she was given the keys to be a showrunner and didn’t flip it into her next quality gig after Insecure.

So guess what? To Hollywood, Quita is the “new” Issa even though Quita is also ehhh but Abbott’s cast is great so she can bake that equity into another gig.
I see that. I would not have been waiting on Hollywood to get my next project off the ground. I would have hit the TV circuit and built my resume. I think I remember when that showrunner deal was happening. To me Issa is a behind the scenes type anyway, some people don't need to be in front of the camera.

I wanted to put myself out there as a ghostwriter, but I don't go out and network and most of my projects are unfinished. I might spend next year finishing all my projects and hitting the pavement in 2027. I kinda want to write a novel before February, I been working on a concept.

It was important to have a show about “normal black people”…but honestly we were better off with “BLACK-ISH” and aspirational black success than the middling shyt that just wasn’t gonna get the audience support it needed to push itself over the ledge financially. Amanda Seales may be annoying but she’s clearly scarred over how that all played out.

You’re not gonna replicate the laid back white shows because you literally dont have enough black only audiences to support that content. Not to mention, it’s always laden with some politically charged motive and not just some normal easy-going shyt. It’s always gotta solve every social issue crammed in there. The sheer function of not having abundant access to opportunities forces these minority writers to stuff each affinity group and movement into their work because they dont feel like they’ll be back. It’s a crazy cycle. This is why Sinner kinda pissed me off with “that scene”

And yet she's never mentioned anywhere else but here and I'm assuming other niche sites. She's not that big of a thing.

I'm aware she had an HBO show that ran for several seasons, also aware of her YouTube beginnings (and I stress just aware of). Never watched it because it's not my thing. I don't watch Shonda Rimes shows either but I hear about her a lot more than Rae.
Right. if Taraji Henson is still talking about being broke then what you think Issa Rae is?
