Wow at some of the responses in this thread.

Her content is 'too Black' now.

Y'all worship drill rappers and crashouts but she uses the N word too much.

Oh excessive sex while you goon to pawg threads.

She needs to cater more to white people.

She needs to have babies? Why.

If you want to say she isn't the best actress, fine but the one thing she can do is write.
I think people are misinterpreting "too black". There's a context

I compare the black wave of the 90s to the black wave of the 2010s often. I rag on the Twitterspeak suburban black folks because so much of that "blackness" is performative and corny. The Kenya Barris, surrealist, look how smart I am shyt that's more about trying make white people uncomfortable or impressed than being good. Their desire to be the black David Fincher or Greg Daniels surpasses everything

I elevate 90s black cinema because it was just black:manny: Friday is a black ass movie. Players Club, Harlem Nights, Poetic Justice, Dead Presidents, Malcolm X and on and on. They weren't without messaging, but the messaging was a reflection of the prevailing conditions without feeling like a lecture from nikkas that want you to know they read James Baldwin and Bell Hooks. This is actually a problem with writing across the board not just black. Fan fiction style writing has taken over the game and in fan fiction, the demands of the writer are prioritized over the demands of the story. Creative selfishness has wrecked storytelling

Too black in the context of this discussion is specifically about the Shea butter Blavity types that use blackness as a vehicle to get them access to more white liberal circles and accolades. The irony is astounding:mjlol:

I think the only current black filmaker that has the balance is Coogler. And Coogler do a lot of shyt I may not like but the good outweighs the bad and it's obvious he's a child of the prevailing black experience. There's a reason his work resonates with the community as strongly as it does. The mainstream success is further emphasis of his overall talent

The show was just okay and the N word stuff comes off as cheap and ignorant to the point where it’s a bratty trope.

Hulu isn’t going to come calling because you made a pseudo ratchet show about a chronically underachieving woman who calls her friends a bıtch every two seconds.

A lot of writers just can’t write well.

I have an associate who moved to LA like 5 years ago to screenwrite. It hasn’t gone well but you can’t be mad at someone going for their dreams but it’s not going to work out.
Your associate picked the worst possible time to jump into Hollywood:mjlol:  during the pandemic?

Regardless Hollywood is done. Aside from a death of creativity the system itself has gotten too expensive to sustain. Nikkas shooting any and everywhere now:mjlol:

Don't know how this will affect future aspiring writers but there were to many bad writers leeching for too long

1) bro, shut up, you’ve made multiple threads and have seventy million posts downplaying her. We know Indian men really don’t like black women, no need to keep discussing it

2) secondly, none of this has anything to do with the concept of why she’s not feeling successful, it’s simply no current project on = I’m not doing enough

I’m black so half of your critique of me already fails on that front. Secondly entertainment doesn’t owe anyone anything. We have to stop acting like this is some civil rights issue that we all need to die in the Hill of. She has a camera and a YouTube account go get it cracking and come back.

Good point. She had a good show but very niche audience. I think there is an appetite for black culture with a universal appeal and it does come in waves; however, most art isn’t being funded because the current power structure is anti arts.

Someone inspired by her works will come up with something new fairly soon like others have said in the thread. The entire world needs new stories and we’re stuck in a world where the majority of people want to live like they did back In The days.

However, like Slim Charles once said “the thing about the old days, is that they the old days”.
Ironically, she had a thing with that show with the Asian boyfriend. Now she acts like she never went through that phase. Cold game.

You all read way too much into what she said…

She’s a typical Type-A overachiever who is never satisfied with her current position.

Issa aspires for more and the current media landscape is challenging.
There’s not too much to read into profit and loss. If she was profitable, she wouldn’t be on essentially a social media comedians podcast talking about how unsuccessful she feels after being the belle of the ball of black media for the last decade.

"Black content" for at least the past decade has been complete Black Twitter and feminist inspired bullshyt spearheaded by people like her, so this is fantastic news.
Honestly, the best thing about Kamala losing is that at least black media can no longer do low brow content like this. Unfortunately, the struggle of the Trump administration will force people to actually put more effort into making things that are interesting and challenge viewers outside of NGO and nonprofit funded Niche humanities major content slop

Entertainment is not inherently supposed to be enlightning. Its accessibility is a reflection of its ability to communicate to wide audiences. If Issa Rae wants to change the world, she should go back to school and get a degree in something useful. I’m tired of content, creators, whining about their art, not being received on their own terms. You don’t get to determine that.

She should go holler at Charlemagne if she’s serious. At least pretend like you know who’s currently hot and who’s not but she probably thinks that’s beneath her so what are we supposed to do?

TYRONE GA!
I mean knowing nothing about the game, it seems that you have to stay active more on relationships so it leads to the creation. Ie kevin hart

Only soo many minority names at the same time and with trump going after any institution ridiculing him or doing any semblance of diversification, it seems these execs arent risking it as much as before.

She had a great run. She cant lament her success. But its the entertainment industry. They all should know how it works.
Bingo

It's not a meritocracy, it's connections and networking.

Everyone don't stay hot forever too.

Her era is over and she needed to adapt.

She didn’t and is now locked in.

Ryan Coogler is clearly the smartest black creative in Hollywood right now. He actually adapts to what is going on.

Shout out to Cord Jefferson

Druski ain’t crying about it. She can figure it out if she wants to humble herself.

Black girl magic content ain’t gonna do it in 2026 though…

The old Hollywood system maybe dead but storytelling isn't going anywhere, it's a part of what makes us human. Folks will have to get creative. If you really LOVE filmmaking or storytelling in general and didn't just get into the business to live the L.A./NYC lifestyle, you will find a way. Kevin Smith fat ass made Clerks with 20k. Spike Lee and John Singleton found a way. If that means shooting/editing movies on an Iphone, Tubi deals or working with Nollywood, so be it.

As you said, folks will have to step their creativity up in order to stand out.

Issa slap in her face 'cause she started on the indie grind.
It gotta be that at a point going indie and building your buzz between projects gotta mean something.
Gotta stop waitin' for them people to validate 'cause she already proved she got good ideas.
If she don't know how to tap into her market demo and produce a product then she always gone be wack.
It's 2025, we gotta stop acting like we can't shake and move and put something in the air.
She’s scared to spend that money she made or she may not have enough. Either way it’s time to show and prove.

Honestly, she’s technically African and married another African dude. Why didn’t she hop on the Afrobeats Wave or at least make West African focused content ? I swear people just refuse to do the thing that’s right in front of them because they think some grand slam is around the corner.

Honestly, what does she expect from us? Is she too humble to crowd fund? Does she want us to retweet a link to a trailer? Meet us halfway at least…
