Truth.

The Death Row run is wildly overhyped due to the impact of a few albums that dropped in a couple years, but the run was mad short. Bad Boy had a much longer run. Suge killed Death Row and its potential after Dogg Food, with all his antics and nonsense he was doing to the artists and people that worked at the label.

Rage said that by '96, they didn't even have anyone working in the office anymore. So she couldn't get help with her album budget and A&R. She said everyone started going their separate ways. Pac was trying to get up outta there too. Once Dre bounced, the label died like a MF.
Correction Puff* had a good 7-8yr run after biggie. None of the bad boy artist have anything to show for bad boys years of chart dominance. That’s kinda the ooont of this thread. As an artist, which label would you get fukked the least. There isn’t a bad boy artist who hadn’t spoken negatively about Puff or their deals with Puff.

Nah, the artists still sold well after BIG passed. Neither label was paying their artists. But Bad Boy was still at least alive.

I hated 112, but they were still dropping platinum albums years after BIG died. Black Rob did over a million sold too. Shyne was selling a good 500,000, G Dep had some big singles for them. Faith dropped another gold album later on years after BIG passed.

So they weren't getting their proper bread, but the label itself was still wildly successful. Even the LOX did a million and Ma$e did some crazy sh*t like 4,000,000. So well after Death Row was on life support, Bad Boy was still making mad hits.

Dre said he was broke when he left Death Row. Suge came to his house with some dudes asking for all the masters. Daz had to sue Suge to get paid for all the work he did, and that took him forever to get. Kurupt said he was broke and had to move back in with family. He said he couldn't even pay his child support. Pac didn't have any bread either. And Snoop left by '97. So none of the Death Row artists were paid either, but the label was dead too. That's the difference. Bad Boy had issues with paying people, but the actual label was still heavy on dropping hit music.

Both pretty horrible options for the most part. But its like the chicken or the egg - some artists like Pac attracted drama. And other major labels, even Def Jam weren't great with street rappers at that time.

I would sign with Bad Boy. Even knowing what I know now, Death Row just seems too crazy. I could easily just avoid the parties if I'm assuming I got signed off talent. I'm pretty sure BIG, Mase & The LOX weren't near any bisexual orgies. Puff knew to some degree who he could expose that shyt to, and I don't think those parties were happening in the 90s. The accusations are much more recent. I would just get my theoretical 5 mic classic off and dip after the major label bidding war.

For the most, almost everybody signed or associated with Death Row survived (Nate Dogg’s passing was after years of heavy drinking) and became legends in their own right:

Dre
Snoop
Nate Dogg
Daz
Kurupt
Quik
Warren G
Rage (did movies & tv, still does music)

Most of these folks are still doing well. Can we truly call anyone not named Biggie or Mase associated with Bad Boy a legend? How many of them are doing well right now?

The Lox. They were with Bad Boys then signed to Ruff Ryder and rapping with goat DMX, etc. The Lox are still doing well

Probably Bad Boy...

Puff knows how to see the bigger picture and have the artist think outside the box.

Biggie wanted to make hit hitting songs but Puff knew that folks weren't going to buy that man's album if it wasn't a radio friendly single to attract listeners.

Street shyt for side B.

I don't know if I can be in a hostile work environment with Suge and his M.O.B henchmen giving out beatings to artists and engineers.

Some of these guys were getting fondled with.

You wouldn’t sexually assaulted or raped in Bad Boy? :mjlol:

At this point, it’s cannon that Bad Boy was the more sexually deviant label. Death Row you have a larger risk of violence.
Not in the '90s.

It seems like Puffy's degeneracy mostly stayed with him being hard on hoes back in the day.

I think all the "rapin' nikkaz" shyt came after Big died and Puffy got around all those rich CACs.

But I don't hear a lot of stories about Bad Boy employees just catching random beatings for rewinding the tape too far or wearing the wrong colors.

Or Puffy having "booty goons" to rape Craig Mack or something

This was years after the 90s tho. None of the original 1994 bad boy roster was making any money after the 90s(the ones who were even alive). Bad Boys ability to recycle artists doesn’t bode well for the artist themselves. It just bodes well for Diddy and his pockets. If you signed to Bad Boy in 1994, there’s no guarantee you’d still even be around in 2000 and beyond still riding on the bad boy wave. You sign in 1994, by 1997 you’ve got screwed over or left for dead financially by puff. Doesn’t seem like a better scenario than Death Row.

The booty goon talk didn’t come out until Ray J brought it up in the 00s. Death Row artists weren’t getting raped or anything like that in the 90s. The rumers of puffs activities and the general freakin was of everyone who comes from that Uptown records line, has been out there. Even biggie himself and Mr.Cee. The Diddy allegations go back. Grooming Usher is a main one. Just being around that isa bad look.
