It's a shame what R&B music has become when you think about what it use to be

Yeah, let's just ignore that these are three of some of the best songwriters in R&B right now. :comeon:

The Dream is great in terms of today's standards but in the 90's he wouldn't have made hardly any noise and I like some of the Dream's stuff ("Falsetto", "Rockin That Thang" and the work he did on Mariah's Imperfect Angel album). But Frank Ocean and The Weekend are overrated. I don't get any of the hype that those two artists get. The Dream is a better writer than he is singer and that's not even saying much in terms of great song writing.

The only new somebody in the game who has talent who can sing and can write and produce some great songs is Bruno Mars. Bruno is one talented cat who can write some great songs and knows how to put together some great music.

not really house and trance always had its own lane....RnB artists saw how that Kelly Roland record sold and they all jumped on the wave.....

Ive always listened to house but the stuff they are putting out isnt as soulful as soulful house or as funky as funky house doesnt have the kind of percussion of tribal house..

Its basically pop music sung to a four to the floor basic beat and thats it...

Basically its music for radio and crossover and thats it...

Why go the house/pop route though, if a singer wants a crossover hit that everybody would like why not just go back to traditional R&B? I think there still is a good market for R&B music about being in love.

What happened to that R&B music that was sweet, cute, and bubbly? Why is it so over sexual and vulgar now? Of course, not everybody's gonna wanna hear music about how someones gonna eat that girls p*ssy, back strokes and how they gonna rain on her face. Not everyone's gonna wanna hear music about how good you are at sex and how you gonna make it rain in the club after. If that shyt wasn't selling then why not just go back to being cute and sweet, the stuff we know that will sell. If you're gonna sell out for music sales you might as well make the good traditional stuff that we know people will buy.

What ever happened to singing about how much you love a girl? Breakups, Make Ups, Love at first sight, you know... stuff the average person can relate to or stuff the average person actually feels comfortable talking about in public.

:whoa:

Bruno Mars is not even on the same astral plane as Frank Ocean as a songwriter (though he is a much better singer).

I think its a combination of things, one of them being that trash is whats supported over quality music nowadays.

:what:

Frank Ocean is as overrated as they come. There's nothing great or even good about his music.

Bruno's a far better writer and producer than Frank Ocean. It's no contest.

I already acknowledged that he's the better singer, but that's where it stops.

When Bruno Mars writes lyrics on the level of "American Wedding," then MAYBE we'll talk.
