you acquire the services for those individuals under an entirely different set of conditions. you didn't ask for the nurse's services, but if you check into a hospital you're going to need a nurse. so a hospital needs nurses on staff.

when you dine out you are choosing to dine out and you are choosing to have someone serve on you hand and foot. a restaurant cannot guarantee a high level of service unless they have a motivated and qualified staff.

you won't have a motivated staff or a qualified staff at 8 bucks an hour.

Uh, you know people do choose the hospital/doctor they are going to have surgery at, have a baby in, do your physical therapy at, get a chronic condition treated at etc. How do those institutions guarantee good service if the nurse isn't getting a tip? And I'm not advocating they get tipped I'm advocating wait staff get a salary like nurses. It seems being a professional ___ who earns and honest wage is good enough for a myriad of service positions. Why isn't it good enough for waiters/waitresses?

Allowing companies to pay their employers less in order to provide more jobs seems very conservative.
Allowing customers the freedom the pay (tip as they choose) regardless of the level of service sounds very libertarian.

You're going to pay a lot more than you do now if servers were paid a high enough wage that you didn't need to tip. A perfect example are country clubs or private dinners where the cost of labor is included.

restaurants have tried...it doesnt work.
Employees dont work as hard.
People dont order as much because of higher prices.

Service you get in America is head and shoulders above other countries.

It works in Australia and they have many world class restaurants.

Presently, with the 'shyt wage/work for tips' system we have I'm fine with it. I always pay 20% at least, if the service is shyt I still pay 15%.
Like I said items only need to go up like 10 - 15% to pay your staff a fair wage. It's really would be a wash if every one tipped 15%. But as we know some people don't even tip which is fukked up.
