I don't even understand what "proper English" means...
I always thought it was code word for white people to say "he doesn't sound like me"

...... it literally means, you speak the language abiding by all the rules of the language.
It's not code by any means...... it literally means, you speak the language abiding by all the rules of the language.
all white people don't even sound the same.
most people do not speak proper english.
It's not code but it is almost exclusively used when white people are referring to any race of brown skin people...:yeah ok:
But it's not code...:yeah ok:
If I started posting clips of white people using "proper english" to describe black people speech and you started posting clips of white people using "proper english" to describe white people speech I would never run out of clips to post and you would be hard pressed to post more than 5
What is "black people speech" ?
Make up your mind, either you don't know what proper english is... or you know it's code for something
when you're using it as a pejorative, it is ( as can any term)... but "proper english" is not something that's universally understood as a derogatory term towards people of color.
Many white people, do not speak proper english....because most whites ( along with everyone else) speak in a dialect of either their native region, or where they currently live.
It mostly means that I studied linguistics. The fact you used this term, tells a lot about you.
and No, "proper" english is not a "rich white peoples" dialect... you can speak proper english with an accent.
Shawn Kemp tho
Damn. Matt Kemp, my bad.

Dude is a fukking idiot. You want proper English, go to fukking England.
It's not code by any means...... it literally means, you speak the language abiding by all the rules of the language.

True, they don't. But difference is, theirs is accepted.
Whereas a black persons is made fun off.
Fox News anchor made fun of Kendrick Lamar by mocking him vocally saying "fo sho" and other stuff he said.
If it was a white guy from Boston say car as "caah or other words", the anchor would not have disrespectfully mocked him. Nor would they disrespectfully mock a country music artist for their dialect.
And going back to middle school I remember white kids mocking the way black kids talked.
It mostly means that I studied linguistics.
And who exactly do you think decided what is proper and improper English is?
Wait, I'll answer that, people were speaking the language well before the idea of correct grammar or even standard spelling was a thing, in the 18th century a bunch of mostly rich and exclusively white people decided that their own dialect is the correct one (to be technical, they also added a bunch of random rules they pulled out of their ass) and that's how you got your standard English.
And just to be clear, I think it's fine to speak standard English, there are definitely a whole lot of benefits of doing so in today's society, but it's also important to understand what it is, there's nothing special or magical about it, and it is not superior in any measurable way (and there are ways to measure it) to other English dialects.
