Listened to this through a couple of times and it's pretty good. So the concept is he's rapping from the perspective of the friend or he's playing the role of the actual friend? The first listen I was likebut then I read it was a concept album and kept listening.

It's both. For instance, both in "Changes" and "4 Your Eyez Only" he was both the narrator and himself. And in "Ville Mentality" he's playing the role of the actual friend with the daughter in between verses voicing her anger about her daddy no longer there.
