Cole is good but the other guys have classic verses and classic albums, and way more impact. Fab is the only guy I would maybe put Cole over and that's still a maybe. Cole wouldn't be as special if he came out during that era cause there was so many spitters.

Cole is one of those super talented underachievers. One of those artists who constantly gets in his own way of making a classic song (i.e. little to no features, his own production is wack, cheap gimmicky topics like love everybody / drugs are bad / where are our taxes going / etc). Like someone else said here, you receive a certain type of bias when you make these sort of concious records cause its hard to hate on some uplift the people shyt even if it's corny or cheesey.

nikkas didn’t even know what a Fayetville was before Cole, but we denying his impact lmao. He also has a successful label, and has a budding star in JID in the shadows

Whats so successful about Dreamville? I'm pretty sure PartyNextDoor or Baby Keem alone have outsold all of Dreamville artists together.

What is this way more impact y’all talking about? You can say Cam and Jada had more impact, but I wouldn’t say way more sans Cam. Fab has had no more impact than Cole, when can anyone of them nikkas make a song like this. Y’all find everything corny, so I take that word with a grain of salt. Type of nikkas to go bump Master P but say Youngboy is trash, nostalgia clouding that mind.

Well they have actual successful compilation tapes, the first compilation album is Gold, on its way to Platinum(if not already). JID is starting to get huge looks (Doja, Imagone Dragons, 21 features) off the strength of his talent. Party makes RNB that’s easier to transition when u under the biggest rapper, Keem and JID are about even. Keems biggest records are a TikTok song and the KDot stimulus package.

One thing i'll give Cole is the content he raps about, it's not like those other guys. That's why he's so popular.

I would agree with this (maybe) if he had better production on his albums. My main problem with him nearly his whole career is that his best production and verses are on other people’s albums. He finally branched out on his most recent album thankfully, but I still didn’t play it much after a few listens. Coke can make dope music but he’s never made anything that hit me like Oh Boy, More Gangsta Music, The Roc (Just Fire), Breathe, or We Gonna Make It.

Fam no disrespect but how old are you lol. Cause Kiss, Cam, Fab have all made songs like this in their careers. And the impact shouldnt even be a debate.

The real question here is when has Cole made an introspective song like the one you posted that became an actual classic in hip hop history like "Losing Weight" or "Still Feel Me"? Cole (and Kendrick) receive an automatic bias because he focuses on this kind of content (i.e. the stereotype that conscious rappers are always elite rappers), but when has one of these songs had the impact that something like that "The Bigger Picture" record by Lil Baby?

Love Yourz is probably the only one, and that song probably did help some people through shyt, but imo that song is incredibly cheesey, like that Eminem Not Afraid bullshyt.

Cole is still cool but hes an underachiever. And Yb is easily one of the best newer artists. You gotta chill with all the "yall" talk.

Keem and JID are not even at all lol. Keem is a much bigger artist. Cmon fam. I dont even like Keem.

And those compilation tapes went gold because of Cole. You can even see a huge disparity in number of plays on Spotify between the songs with Cole and the songs without Cole.

So what topics would escape the gimmicky/corny label?

Disagree. Cole has rapped literally with a bunch of all timers and never been killed on any track

Jadakiss is a whole different breed. J Cole couldn't kill Ross

Show me J.Cole's Foreclosure.

Ross murdered that song and many more. Ross pen is immaculate.

He needs to go deeper with it like Kendrick does. He also needs to make sure he isnt sacrificing entertainment value just to get a message across in a song.

Cole has done it before, but a lot of his shyt is really on-the-nose and surface level Twitter consciousness. Its the same reason dudes like Logic, Russ, Joynar Lucas are perceived as corny. Its like they go in the studio and say "I'm going to make a song about x topic" and then they rap the most basic obvious viewpoints on that topic, usually without much of their own experience. Theres hardly any depth or sophistication, and then casual listeners go "at least hes not rapping about sex / drugs / drilling opps" like dude said some enlightened shyt when it was really some common sense lol.

Like look at his biggest album. He has a song about losing his virginity (which was some weird shyt cause he told a contradicting story before on "Too Deep For The Intro"). He has a song about appreciating his mother. He has a song about loving yourself. None of these songs had any real depth and sophistication. They were all pretty surface level, cheap and gimmicky.

You see this shyt all over KOD too. Here's the song about drugs. Here's the song about money. Here's the song about vanity. Here's the song about x y z.
