I think I need to write an article on this because people don't get what I've been saying when I tell them that their are no casual fans anymore. There are only stans. Stans will cop whatever you put out as long as it is what they fell in love with you for in the first place. It doesn't matter what people outside of that think or what critics think (and I think the critics are always more right than stans). That is why critiquing an album is pointless. No one is actually sitting there starting off judging production, instrumentation, lyrics, flow, etc. They are first looking for the personal connection (even if they don't realize it) and then they're getting to all that other stuff. As matter of fact, that stuff will only come up if people aren't stans of you. Album reviews only matter for award season and even that is now just a popularity contest (Grammys don't act like the Oscars). Beyonce had the highest grossing tour of the year with two barely top 40 singles and still grossed something like 240 million off of only 49 shows. You guys are behind when you're talking about "what's hot." People like Young M.A. are hot for group settings and parties, but no one cares about her backstory, she didn't give them "her." People want heroes and something to connect to. All the biggest stars sell for that reason. The era of buying an album for a hot song are over. All hit singles do is get people to open up the book like Cole himself said.

FYI, this is dope for Cole, but he dropped in December with no new big songs out. The test is next week.
