I lived in Würzburg during the rise of Dirk and outside of that small community, Germans could give less than a damn about him. One town over the local soccer club superstar got more love. You're not seeing basketball courts or gyms with pick up games but you will see soccer fields damn near every other mile. Basketball isn't that big as people make it out to be. Trust me
